That's called balance. When you design weapons in your game, you don't want players to only use one. Given the urban context of most videogame maps, you are rarelly engaging at more than 50m (battlefield is an exception), which would render all weapons beside shotgun suboptimal, hence players only using that.
Also, if we talk realistic, pellets are useless against armor. Simulations like moded stalker, Arma, ReadyorNot, 6days in fallujah will teach you that unless you use AP ammo, they look great until you shoot someone dead center, realisize he has kevlar and you are too far away to stun him with the impact, and get mowed by his AP SMG/AP rifle before you can shoot again.
As for the finals, player resilience isn't realistic so no reason to have sniper shotguns.
right now, the model shotgun retain most of its damage at medium range, as well as the light one ( mostly because of the huge DMG per shot). The only one where you can't do any decisive damage past 10m is the heavy one.
Ya it just be machine guns everywhere because it would only take a couple bullets from any where to anywhere, also many guns would likely be less accurate especially with how people shoot them in games, let alone this game (especially as lights both in the act and their clear body capability).
I brought this up to people in the Killing Floor forums when people complaining about the dlc weapons being unrealistic and everyone flipped out on me. The flamethrower in killing floor is unrealistic.
Even the lever action rifle in that game is a Hollywood one because it would jam at the speed players shoot at. Nevermind how weak of an explosion c4 has compared to moves.
Games are supposed to be unrealistic.
