The Sword rework should take inspiration from Bloodborne
Specifically the Besathunter Saif. To explain a bit, the weapon is a kind of unfoldable sword that allows for two seperate movesets, but two of the attacks stand out that make it really techy to use.

There is the lunge (sounds familiar), and there is the disengage, the latter being what I think the Sword should have to increase it's nuance. At the moment because of the insane ease and damage that the sword does by just moving into players and lunging, there is little that actually makes it interesting. You just do a stupid amount of damage with it, and rinse repeat. Boring, and frustrating to die to at that.

I feel that the lunge should be the base attack, albeit with it's damage heavily nerfed, maybe holding down for longer will increase the lunge distance, but make your attacks take longer between swings. Then the alt-attack should be the disengage slash which has to be done close but does the current sword lunge damage.

The lunge damage isn't the problem with it at the moment, it feels more like that the damage being partnered to something SO GOOD at closing the distance (lunge) is the problem.

Watch some moveset showcases for the Beasthunter Saif on YouTube to see what it looks like. That weapon was crazy fun to use, because of the cool spacing techs you could do with it, such as being able to get closer to targets by using a disengage attack but while facing away from them. It was extremely cool.

P.S. This is not a nerf sword post, it's a make sword have some actual nuance post. This is written by someone who loves using the dagger, THAT feels cool to use, sword right now just feels cheesy.
