What do you think of the CL-40?
Hey,

Still new to the game, about 70 hours in.

I mostly played Light. But now I almost only play Medium with Heal Beam and Defib because I like being a support.

I use the AKM most of the time and I do decent.

However I really like the CL-40, but I almost always do worse with it. Is it a viable weapon? Are there obvious tips with it? What do you guys think of it?

Thanks for reading and for your replies.

The CL-40 has been nerfed into uselessness in most cases...

However, I still only use it unless I have to use something else.

If you don't mind playing support and dying alot, the CL-40 is good :)

Heh, if it's not good then I guess I won't use it that much.

Don't get me wrong, I have fun when I use it, but I also do better with the AKM that's for sure.

Hey there. CL-40 pro over here. Been using the weapon since launch and even got featured in Ep. 2 of the Season 4 community highlights using the CL-40. Here's what I have to say about the weapon:

You use the healing beam, which is OK with the CL-40, but the turret and dematerializer is better. Turret chips away at enemies to make opponents easier to kill, and the demat. allows you to set yourself up in favourable positions to ambush opponents and make space for safe reloading.
High ground is your friend, as aiming upwards with the CL-40 puts you at a major disadvantage. I personally never pass up an opportunity for blasting an opponent in mid-air, though. Air shot elims are nutty.

The weapon is excellent at getting rid of lights, as you only need 2 grenades. Same with melee users, since they can't do anything but try to close the gap as you lob those grenades at them. You'll find yourself struggling against heavies however, as you need not only be accurate with 4 grenades but also survive long enough to slowly shoot them out and prevent the heavy from killing you first. Any grouped up enemies will perish thanks to the splash damage of the CL-40, so mainly people trying to coordinate a steal with body blocks and whatnot.

The weapon destroys obstacles in the arena VERY reliably without needing to use any gadgets like the frag grenade to clear out junk. Consider destroying hand railings that are cumbersome to climb over, windows that you can't reliably tell if they've been broken to pass through, or trees that block lines of sight with their branches and copious leaves. Only 2 shots to get rid of goo, too, which I know is getting a lot more popular lately.

Try to avoid hitting yourself with your own grenades by getting used to the grenade's explosion radius. This way, you can gauge how far past your feet you need to aim to not chip away at your precious health pool.

Overall the weapon is not that versatile enough to be considered "great" but it provides a fun challenge that's unlike anything else the medium arsenal has at this point. In games with lots of light builds, it's B tier, but with tons of heavies, it's C tier at best.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer!

I will keep all of that in mind.

So basically: Lotsa Heavies = Don't use it. Gotcha!

I will swap to the turret too when I use it.

Thanks again!
it's a bit of a niche pick depending on enemy team composition but nothing beats dropping lights in two shots and entire teams in four shots when they're all bunched up on a cashout station. i highly recommend bringing zipline + jump pad for movement and defib or data reshaper depending on what the other mediums are running for their gadgets

Thanks. I almost always use jump pad.

I use zipline for suspended structures type of "modifiers" on maps.

its useless now. Unless you want 7 assists and maybe 1 kill.

I only use it to torture lightweights on quickcash for fun

in season 1 and 2 it was great in combo with mines you can throw mins blow them up with the luncher to deal a noce amount of damage i think it wuld be working better if the medium hase fire mines too or som kind of

I find goo grenades pair well with both CL40 and jumppads. Its instant high ground, provides cover to reload, can block unfavorable sightlines eg enemy team opens a hole in the roof above you. And Jumppads can be angled on the goo to provide much more control over where it sends you, especially nice in Low grav events as a well placed pad lets you fly all around the map.

Hey! I'll have you know that normally I have 3-4 kills and 14-18 assists :D

These days, I still play with only the CL40 because I'm stubborn and I like the fun. I play as if its artillery - if you mark out where enemy players are, I'll lob grenades there from up to 100 metres away.

While I only play powershift, I can easily put all 5 shots on the platform at 100+ metres range - which is perfect for thinning out health and anti-air before the team hits the platform.

The splash damage is still sweet f.a. compared to what it was pre-season 3 - which takes away 90% of the usefulness of the CL-40.

But hey, about another 60,000 XP and my CL-40 will be level 9.....

Its also one of the best anti sniper weapons if u can aim at 100m
The CL-40 was my favorite for quite some time, it may not be the best, but it is a weapon of chaos and that is the fun aspect of it. Once you get a decent feel for the arch it got. You can then use it at a really long range were even other long range weapons can struggle a bit.

And since it got that arch, you can sometimes also shoot from behind a cover while you may need to regain some health.

CL-40 Is A Different Weapon In The Class Of Medium, It More so Focuses On Your Actual Movement / Gamesense And The Ability To Understand It As A Whole, It Is My Favorite Support Weapon On M As It Has Good AOE And Has Saved Me Countless Times From (Insert Light Gameplay Here) But Its Not A Weapon For Everyone, You Also Will 100% Die To Yourself At Least 5 Times Guaranteed.

As of this writing I have exactly 76,200 xp 'til I get the level 9, myself. Can't wait to use the predasheen skin!
