And even if you weren't pinged in that moment, there's a bug where if you die immediately after being pinged, you still show up as pinged the whole rest of the match to the player who pinged you. Best to just assume you can be seen at all times.
Edit: additionally, its better to play on the opposite side of the point where the smoke landed, that is the center of the smokes "circle". throwing a second smoke between you and the enemy is also quite useful if you plan to move around a lot while engaging, wouldnt recommend spending the time to throw a second smoke while you are being engaged though.
While I doubt this is the case here, I do want to see this bug addressed. I've been on both sides of it, and it's dumb. It basically gives an entire team "wallhacks" and they can see your every movement indefinitely, even after you die and respawn.
