goo barrel direction problem

I've been playing this game for almost 200 hours and i still can't figure out how to throw a goo barrel to consistently create a wall in front of me. Half the time it seems to create a wall that is the way i want - perpendicular to the direction i'm facing, and half the time it creates one in my line of sight (a straight line), trapping me inside it even, and the stun is often fatal.

What gives??? How do you control the orientation of goo? I don't have this problem with grenades, apparently

I believe the major difference between barrel and nade is different hitboxes. Since both goo barrel and goo nade are working on impact, it's safe to assume that goo barrel just hits some debree (walls, static props like chairs tables, stairs etc) on the way. I've had the same problem honestly and was just wondering HOW THE HELL DOES IT EVEN WORK. But in the end i just stopped using goo barrels so often and if i decide to use it - only if I'm sure that space is open enough to not trap myself inside of a goo. Idk, maybe I'm wrong, just assumption
