It wasn't this way when I first started playing.
It's always had this issue, damage is also inconsistent. hit reg is 50/50 and it's clear as day when you start losing gun fights you normally win when hit reg is acting properly. Really pathetic
One way you can tell things are really messed is when you shoot directly into a pane of glass in front of you and it doesn't break, sometimes until 3 bullets, when it should break in one.
Also you will see the "eliminated by" listings either showing 0 damage (unlisted) or like 1 shot (say 25dmg) when you hit 6 shots that registered on your end.
Teleporting backwards and freezing in really bad lag times.
Picking up a gas barrel and having it 'disappear' and then you try to throw it and it appears 2 - 3 seconds later and shoots off into the sky or something.
Shooting directly into a light at point blank range with an FCAR and after an entire mag is emptied the light still has half health.
Pre-firing and landing perfect shots on an enemy that didn't see you, emptying 2/3 of a mag, only to have them melt you in a fraction of a second.
Emptying half a mag into an enemy and the bar not even moving, just "frozen".
Gun stops shooting and grenade ping-pongs back into your hand final round of a tournament at critical moments... It is just impossible to win gunfights, and then your teammates probably think you're ♥♥♥♥.
I had 3 games yesterday where the lag DISAPPEARED (which is extremely rare), and it is like playing a different game altogether. You MELT your enemies, similar to the top streamer gameplays. It truly made the game a pleasure to play for once. No issues in any other games for me, just The Finals.
I guess the silver lining of all of this... had to get so damn good at the game just to "survive" and compensate for this net code, that when I go back to other games my performance is better than ever.
Also: I love this game, its a great concept, fun team based play, can't say there is anything else like it out there -- and I really hope this gets resolved at some point. But at this point I would have to say it has the worst netcode I have seen in my ENTIRE LIFE, and I've been gaming online since Delta Force (1998) on a 28.8k dialup modem. Never had bullets just disappear like in this game.
Delta Force! Awesome! What squad did you play for? Remember dfnation? Ahh the memories... Good times.
Good times indeed! Unfortunately my memory from that time is hazy, can't remember squad names. But I remember how awesome of a feeling it was to have "scheduled practice"/skrims vs. other squads where we would practice different tactics, each member with their specific role and duty. It was my first ever experience of feeling part of a team like that in online gaming, and as a kid that was an amazing feeling. Also: Long live ICQ and AIM!
I also remember saving every cent I had to buy the "ASUS TNT2 Riva Ultra" with 3dfx, a whopping 32MB of VRAM, just so I could play Delta Force 2 when it came out. Oh how far we've come ;)
I can speak for myself personally: I'm playing from Canada, using Rogers Cable internet (via a subsidiary that leases their lines), on North American servers. My ping to 39.75.95.34.bc.googleusercontent.com is 15 - 25ms. My ping to ec2-54-175-191-204.compute-1.amazonaws.com was 50ms and ping to ec2-34-203-50-46.compute-1.amazonaws.com was 46ms at the time I recorded connections while playing. If you're wondering what these are, they are resources/servers provisioned on Amazon AWS and I assume a central NA Finals server.
Yes, Cable is not the best internet type for latency, but it works perfectly fine. Despite being only user on a 150/30 Mbit line, and those ping times, the issues listed above still occur. I can't get any other internet cause Fiber is not offered to my area and the alternative is DSL with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ speeds, higher costs, and maybe slightly better latency.
For reference, we used to play on servers on dialup modems that could not even reach 2.5kb/s speeds, and even playing 300ms - 500ms ping times (which was bad), we could still play the FPS with a bit of shoot-ahead mechanics. It was even possible to play at 1000ms, an entire second ahead, which would be the case if you were connecting to some remote server in RU or CN, or if the player was from there connecting to a NA server. But being in the 100's of ms was not uncommon in many games, and things were fine, I never felt anything like this "lag" that occurs in The Finals -- it is strange; different.
I am also well aware of all the variables in routing, the reality that multiplayer netcode/sync is NOT easy by any means, neither is lag compensation. These are definitely hard problems. But there is most definitely a massive issue somewhere in the stack -- whether the netcode, the server processing, overloaded servers or some routing issues that manifest themselves in a way ping seemingly isn't affected. And the reality that it DOES "sometimes work" means there is hope. I am not sure if they are using Blueprints in UE for the netcode logic, which might be hell to debug, or some built in solution with compiled code that they can't dig into to resolve... but I really do hope they have some luck and one day we see a "Massive improvement in netcode and server performance" in the patch notes.
That was my first time being part of an organized team online as well (I was in -mod-, TKOTH champs 1999). It was exciting and we took it so seriously. Scheduling your evenings around practice and matches was so much fun. Speaking of ICQ, I still remember my ICQ number and currently my phone text notification sound is set to the high pitched "uh-oh" wav. Only us old heads recognize it. TNT2, wow, fancy! My cousin and I jointly saved up for a p3-500mhz Dell and got the first cable connection in the neighborhood. We thought we were hot stuff. Our squad went on into DF2, which was great, but nothing could top the DF1 days for me. Team based first person shooters were so new at the time, I was hooked. I have the DF1 disc packed away in box somewhere. Surprised to see novalogic has all their games on steam.
Like you said, the netcode they were able to implement in 1999 was impressive considering the wide range of connections they had to bring together, from dialup to the infamous T1. Not sure why The Finals has any lag at all.
That is really cool, I also remember my ICQ number, probably for eternity. Having the Uh-oooh sound as a ringtone is epic. I can still hear it vividly in my head. Also had earliest cable at one point, it was called "Rogers @Home" and had this amazingly built modem from LANCity made out of metal (https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/xy4AAOSwoR1lOMXC/s-l1600.jpg). Wonder if you had the same?
TKOTH and -mod- both sound familiar, but particularly TKOTH. Was it "The Kings of The Hill" or something? I think I have my Delta Force 2 in-box still, an old memento of good times gone by. Really am surprised someone on The Finals discussion group of all games actually popped up from a time most gamers these days were in diapers or not born lol
