How come for my first few games im getting hundreds or thousands but every game after is like 50 or 60 with the occasional 100. VERY hard to get new equipment.

you get 1000 at account lvl 5 i believe
also its based on personal performance, usually i get 90-160 a game also tournament mode gets you more
longer matches = more VRs

40 hours play for me = open almost all the equipment

Yeah i started to try a bit harder so i was just not good enough with little patience
