it's also not better than windows imo, and therein lies the problem - as i said in my comment, mass adoption will never happen simply because 99.9% of people do not give enough of a ♥♥♥♥ to bother figuring out how linux works (hell, most people barely know how windows works).
Like others already said, EAC supports Linux and works well with other games that are playable under Linx.
The only way that Windows is better is that people are lazy and they already (barely) know how to use Windows.
Literally the only thing that I can't do on Linux that you can do on Windows is play games that don't have anti-cheat compatible with Linux.
I personally would never go back to Windows, but I can't recommend Linux to everyone, even to tech-savvy friends. It's occasionally as unstable as windows can get, gaming on it a little bit more complicated than on windows (granted as long as windows doesn't fuq your experience, as windows does), it is limited in various ways in terms of gaming (e.g. Raytracing), etc etc.
On top of that, it's a huge commitment to learn the OS. Hell, even just choosing the "right" distro for you is already a giant headache most people wouldn't even want to go through.
But.
Linux most certainly has the POTENTIAL to completely outpace windows. We have been getting more and more improvements, especially regarding gaming, in the last couple of years.
Completely disagree. I have a business fixing/refurbishing Macs and doing other home IT projects. So I end up with a ton of like 2010-era iMacs and Macbooks that no longer get updates from Apple. I usually swap in an SSD and install Mint Linux and give them away for cheap or free to poor people. Mostly very old poor people since some of my clients are retirement homes.
There is nothing to learn for most people. What do you have questions about compared to Windows? You install the OS, click the software shop and type in "steam" and install it. All the basics of using a Windows computer apply almost 1:1 for Mint Linux. Start bar? Check. Task bar? Check. System tray? Check.
I think that people who believe it is difficult to pick a distro or use Linux are overthinking it. Mint Linux is so simple and straightforward out of the box that anyone who uses Windows can use it pretty much instantly, even very old people. I used to customize it so that it looked like WIndows, but found it was a waste of time.
yes I will work on it right away gfunk thank you
1. Gaming on Linux is pretty easy. It is even easier, as most / all drivers are already installed and up to date. I can't even count the windows systems I encountered with missing / severly outdated drivers.
2. Raytracing is working flawlessly. I have only tested it on an Nvidia-Laptop (with Optimus BS) and it was perfect. I just don't get why anybody thinks thats a important feature.
3. I installed Linux on several machines that ran Windows previously, which I have supported for free. I just hadn't enough time anymore the deal with all the MS crab, since then nobody had a real problem and my support effort is near zero.
4. Speaking of commitment: In my experience most people can easier switch from Windows 7 / 10 to Linux Mint for example, then they can adapt to Windows 11. Especially if they don't think they know much about computers, as many long time Windows users do.
4.1. You also don't wake up with a major upgrade done silently on your PC with Linux and you don't know anymore how to use it. I had to help some people in my family / friends with exactly that problem.. Windows 11 installed itself. Surprice motherfoooker!
5. The distro choice is often cited as a big problem, but how did you choose your car.. there are so many brands. Not to speak off your clothes, your monitor, your keyboard, your fridge.... what game to play on Steam.. too many choices, they should delete 99% of them!
You just choose what fits or stick with what everybody else picks. Simple.
But I think trying to convince a Windows user that Linux is cool is like trying to convince a meat eater to go vegan.
I think Microsoft, if they keep doing what they are doing with Windows, will drive people who understand what the problem is with Windows to Linux or Mac all by themselves. For me, Microsoft is not the antichrist, but they do a lot of weird things with Windows that I don't like.
Steam Deck and Microsoft are making Linux a cool operating system for home users. I believe in that.
vegans wail about "muh animal suffering"
linux users wail about you being cattle. It's not the same
The Arch community is unfortunately in mount stupid
