This one - it's the best version, hands down.

This one. If you saw how tedious and boring the bosses were in the original engine, you'd probably agree.

Wait, did the PSP version have the voice acting?

Because you don't want that. It's horribad. The PC version cut it out and it's all the better for it.

Yeah, the PSP version had voice acting. Can't say I was overly fond of it either, for whatever that's worth. But then again, it seems like that tends to be my opinion for almost any game that voices pretty much everything. =p

As to the original post, I'd definitely say the PC version (Steam or otherwise) of this game is my favorite iteration of the story.

You're not alone. Voices are hit or miss for me too.

You can turn it off, which is what I did. And the extra content is nothing to write home about. There were a couple of extra bosses, but those got added to the later PC version in Japan that the Steam version is based on. All PSP gives you aside from voice acting is the second boost mode, which is BROKEN AS HELL.

PS: Technically the voice acting wasn't "removed" from the Steam version because it never existed on PC to begin with. The PSP version came out after the PC version in Japan. The more you know.

I played the Super NES version of Ys III through several times, I liked it. Hopefully some version of Ys III will be available on Steam soon.

For Oath : the PC version of course. Nothing against the PSP but it's not the same.

As for Wanderer I'm curious to know which version is the best for that.

Since Oath basically overwrite the original I think there is no chances...

Its place in gaming history is firmly set as one of the most impressive PC-88 games and that's how it should be experienced. Not my favorite game in any case, but all the the console ports have worse graphics and/or gameplay than the original (Genesis is the least terrible if you must).

Emulation of the PC-88 is tricky.

But it's obvious how much Oath improved on the original, replacing it.

I've compared screenshots of the ports, and to be honest, I don't get why you say that.

The SNES version sounds way better, at least the BGMs, and the graphics aren't that bad at all, even compared to the PC-88.

Screenshots will not do it justice. SNES has poor hit detection and TG-16 has choppier animation and background scrolling. The final staircase climb on PC88 is a visual programming marvel of the time that the console ports fail to replicate. Genesis is the best approximation (though stiil not perfect) and has by far the best handling of the soundtrack, being FM like the original and basing its arrangements on the superior X68000 version.

This is easily the best version.

I have a soft spot for the SNES Wanders from Ys, but that game is pretty terribly designed and very badly translated. The combat strategies are all either grinding or cheese. I wouldn't mind seeing another crack as a platforming Ys game, but that one was a flop, IMO.
