Avoiding the unavoidable attack:
1. Boost when Initially Activated --> Adol is Invincible for around 1 to 2 seconds.
2. Use the 3-Strike Air-Attack Combo, followed by Wind Magic to reach the other side.
Rather obtuse solutions to an insane problem. Does very little for "Wait it out", but at least makes it significantly more likely to beat the boss sooner (so ultimately less waiting).
Thanks for this advice! Didn't cross my mind that I could do those 2 things, so I'm glad there's a way to avoid the damage from when he decides to charge the spot you're stranded on. Thankfully I already beat this boss and cleared the rest with no relative trouble yesterday, but hopefully others with similar sentiment towards Gyalva take a look at this.
If you get caught out and your boost is still charging, you also take half damage while casting spells, so you can just fireball spam and eat the hit.
Always wondered whether this was an initial fix in Felghana for the odd issue from Napishtim where the player could take damage twice as fast within a continuous attack (e.g. flame jets) while using Elemental Abilities. 1/2 Damage at Twice the Damage Rate seemed to make sense.
That said, I can't recal if it's possible to take damage twice as fast while using Magic in Felghana, but I also don't recall anywhere near as many lingering enemy attacks either. Using Magic to guard against Gyalva's charge may suggest that this has been completely fixed in Felghana.
I've actually tested this using the Flame Turrets (charging into the flame stream). As far as I can tell, Adol receives damage for the entire duration of the thrust, suggesting that there is no invincibility. As far as I can tell, anytime Adol doesn't receive damage, it's because he's charged out of the Damaging Area of the enemy attack.
The spam-damage issue also affects the Wind Element and Fire Element (also tested using the Flame Turrets); in both of these I have not observed any noticeable invincibility frames.
If there is a period of invincibility to any of the Elemental Attacks, it's so limited and short that it would probably require looking at the code to conclusively prove that it's there.
