You can, but I think you would be doing yourself a big diservice from enjoying the game fully without at least playing Yakuza 7(the previous game in the main series). It's also known as Yakuza Like a Dragon.

Ichiban is the new MC of the franchise and made his first appearance in Y7. You won't appreciate Ichiban and his history as well as his exclusive returning side-characters FULLY just by playing Y8.

There's going to be many things in Y8 that is going to a "point back" to Y7.

So, ..............................no you don't have to play all the games were Kiryu is the MC. It's not needed at all. However, I would strongly recommend you play Yakuza 7 first.

No problem. Just to avoid any confusion....... Yakuza 7 is called Yakuza Like a Dragon.
This was actually my first game in the series.

Honestly - you can play every Yakuza game as a separate title, if you know that you have not much time or just want to try a new game.

However, I would highly suggest to start with Y0 to see if you like it or not. Then if you like it play Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3-6, Yakuza Like a Dragon, Like a Dragon: Gaiden, and then Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth

Also you can just buy Judgment or Lost Judgment - different titles and you can enjoy them, they are both in Kamurocho, graphics are the same mostly as in Kiwami 2 or Yakuza 6 or Yakuza Like a Dragon, story is great, combat is very good too.

Plus you can try Ishin someday, but it's another story, and I think it's not very liked in community, however I like Ishin personally.

I'd definitely recommend playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon before this one, as it's a direct continuation of the story that begins there. It may also be helpful to watch a plot summary of the main Yakuza games from 1-6 so that you have full context for Kiryu, the secondary main character for Infinite Wealth.

I start from Yakuza 7, then 0-6, then Ishin (not finished yet, didn't like it) and Gaiden, if you like the story from Y7, I highly suggest you to buy every Yakuza games:steamhappy:
