Which is why I've played mahjong in the Yakuza games exactly once and now run away screaming every time it pops up.
They must match either the round wind (every game begins with east) or your seat wind.
But i will always go back too play Rommé, its my game of devil
I tried one game out of the blue blind and had no clue what was going on, worse is that the game doesn't let you quit out and I had to sit through about 4+ matches of randomly clickin on tiles and sitting their in confusion
Poker on the other hand, I did spend about an hour or so playing straight as Kiryu and co.
Some decent gear rewards (at the time at that mid-level) and a great way to earn Party member bonds
And you can press it every turn, it will tell you if you're one tile away from winning and what tiles and how many of each are available. If you're not one tile away, nothing happens.
The riichi button is also used when calling a closed kan (you have 4 copies of the same tile).
And yeah I also rely on pressing the riichi button instinctively in yakuza games.
