It´s a lot of fun to do IMO but don´t worry about it, it´s not very complicated.
it´s impossible to mess up.
Switch classes all you want and try them out.
Level all the classes on every character or use the starting one they come with for the entire game.
Basically you can choose jobs based of what animations you like.
There´s a bit of room for optimization as to what job skills you inherit but if you grind out the "dungeons" a bit for materials you can level jobs really fast at the same time so anything you are not happy with skill wise is easy to sort while improving your gear at the same time.
As long as you have strong gear on the characters I think the difference between a theoretical "optimal" build party and a random tossed together one is not huge.
TLDR, don´t worry about those stats ;)
Actually never played a Yukaza game this challenging not sure if even remember dying once in the other games. Before like a dragon.
I wouldn't really call that "difficulty" lol. The game just has a weird automatic scaling when it comes to being underleveled compared to LAD. All that really matters is the colour above the enemies' head. You can be 1 level below turning them from pink to red, which is a tiny difference in stats but both the effect on the damage you deal and damage the enemies deal on you is insane compared to where they should be. Of course, technically being 1 level before turning them from red to blue is just as annoying since on normal mobs you can just instantly win fights. So long as enemies are red or blue in this one you don't have much to worry about. Worst case scenario, you get bored because you didn't upgrade your weapon enough and dmg is pitiful.
I had more issues with LAD "difficulty" than I did in this game simply because of the massive difficulty spikes and lack of ability to really level outside of cheesing that 1 enemy. Even then LAD required a lot more strategy and planning than this one. I quickly learned that sure I can try to use buffs/ debuffs/whatever in this game but it's actually faster to just win. I barely used consumables/items in this game, while in LAD it was required.
In past Yakuza games all you really needed was either being good at the game, abuse a few cheese strats or buy items/consumables/whatever to ensure the win. Personally, I always grinded in those games anyway but I know that without those grinds and being underleveled/not unlocking tigerdrop I'd struggle even on normal mode, let alone the higher difficulties.
From what I remember, I didn't grind all that much until about 60% of the way through or a bit before unlocking the 2nd dungeon. I did take the game VERY slowly though. Mainly focusing on minigames. I somehow managed to be around the recommended level (Within a 1 level difference higher or lower) for the main story. In terms of gear, I was usually not up to date in that, until around chapter 4/5 and I beat the island mini game and just bought a bunch of 6 star clothes in Hawaii (Not shoes or hats). Outside of that, I tended to be behind in gear, especially weapons. I basically jumped from whatever I managed to find through pickups (3-5 star weapons and no upgrades) to 6-7 star weapons. Honestly, the game gives u a lot of what you need to stay within the recommended gear levels. I didn't switch too much between jobs in-comparison to you but it wouldn't have made a difference since for most of my play through permanent stats between jobs were bugged. At most I had every character with 3-4 jobs a bit leveled if you include their base job.
The levels where people join ur party are the default levels and are where the game thinks you should be at that point in time.
That explains why I've been wrecking face ever since around when a certain white-haired guy joined the party late in the game. He was like four levels below everyone else in the party and right around that time was when I started just beasting on everything lol
