2. they matter in a way, because sometimes your farm will get attacked by pests ( i think their level goes higher if you follow the sujimon substories) and if you dont train your sujimon enough then they cant defend your farm from them
In regards to 1, they DO actually wander between areas within reason, HOWEVER, this only happens when they have nothing to do. If you give them enough items to interact with, they will not get chance due to the day length. The only things they can't do iirc is cross "non-paths", namely, bridges and beaches. Either way, any decently done island will pretty much lock them in one area functionally though yeah.
