everything that guests interact with needs to be near a path or road to be used by the guests (decorations can be put anywhere).
when you're placing it you can actually see when its close enough, you'll see the words "available for guest use" or something near that in the info box. That goes away if you move it away from a path. So things don't have to be touching the path or road but they do have to be very near to it.
also residences can be places on paths but you need to place the path first then put in the residence.
X/square in building mode lets you build new paths, these act just like the road so you can build things in that space. its not wasted at all.
I don't know the keyboard button for that but it should literally be on screen in the build mode.
The assets link up just fine I've never had one not work I've watched guests use them all and the stats go up when i lay them. I have a fully built up island with a few "city block" setups with alleys built in and stuff and they all link up to paths fine.
Now if you are right and the people will actually follow the additional roads, that might actually be a bad thing. They all walk so slow you probably want them to go as little distance as possible while interacting with as much as they can. I can still easily reach max happiness with guests with what is built on the main roads, with no interaction with them other than a campfire.
