Would've been better as a brawler
Title says it all. I don't know what possessed the devs to go down this JRPG turn based kick but the only time I really enjoy this game's combat is when I'm playing as Kiryu and use his special power to pretend to be a brawler for a short while. Outside of that, only playing it for the story.

What a shame.

It's the other way around for me. Gameplay is king and I wouldn't play the game that has the best story ever if I didn't like the gameplay. That's why I stopped playing the brawlers in the series.

I'm enjoying every second of Infinite Wealth though.

Yeah the game is extremely lame, there's no gameplay.

It's basically stats porn. Play a real RPG with Persona, that's a good game.

Y8 feels like playing a JRPG from the 90's but not the good ones, the very janky and boring ones. There's no strategy, no challenges it's just a brain-dead game.

The stretched and repetitive story was already annoying in modern yakuza with gameplay but here it's even more of a pain.

The gameplay loop of this small empty sandbox with PS2/PS3 re-used assets for the xx time is just :

- Loading the game
- Loading the save
- Walk to GPS point
- Loading
- Skip cutscene "intro"
- Another loading
- Skip irrelevant cutscene
- Another loading
- Watch the only relevant cutscene (The ones that aren't in-game.)
- Another loading
- Fight start, group of random PS2 animated goons, EXTREME GAMEPLAY NOW, Press 1 button to select an AOE on the over powered class and One shot everyone. GG
- Another loading
- Skip conclusion cutscene
- Another loading
- Watch the only relevant cutscene that forward the plot a tiny bit or repeat the previous important cutscene cause gamers are now retarded.
- Loading
- Go to next GPS point

Repeat till the end of the game with the only variation that are Boss fights who takes just a 30 minutes spam of your highest cost skippable cutscene moves until they die. No strategy, no healing required, nothing. Might use MP item if you forgot to refill the bar cause of the goons one shot.

I've seen less loading screens on my PS2 games than this. Good god.

I mean lets be real, the brawling gameplay in the other games wasnt much more than just hitting the same moves over and over and dipping into the menu for the healing items either.

Absolutely not. I much prefer the turn based gameplay.

I do wish it wasn't quite so level based though. You have no chance against guys more than a few levels above you. It would be nicer if strategy mattered more than level

I've beaten kiryu games with the same punch and side-step move I learned at the beginning of the game....

Just for funnsies to see if I could do it. .....I beat boss fights and the last boss fight in Gaiden just by using those jet shoes.

Never needed to throw a single punch or use health items.

Nah man...the brawler games were fun enough but the turn-based gameplay at least gets a little complex compared to how in all the previous games you could just hit the same two special moves over and over to trash every single boss.

lol, you do not see the irony in your comment?

The JRPG route was originally an April Fools joke. However, the fans liked the concept so much the team decided to turn it into one. Even the main character is a Dragon Quest nerd.

Another reason they're doing this is because they wanted variety. 7 was a huge breath of fresh air because despite being yet another LAD title, it was a whole different game

No, it wasn't. Stop spreading that crap.

I think a brawler wouldnt be as fun personally the entire game is built around being an rpg, a beat em up wouldnt be an rpg. as well almost none of the jobs would work properly since its about positioning

RGG has always been an RPG. It just switched from ARPG to turn-based RPG.

No it hasn't? It's a beat em up with RPG elements. Dark Souls or Monster Hunter would be an ARPG

You won't convince me that RGG wasn't an RPG before RGG7.

The only way the brawler style game play would be fun if they made it A LOT more complex and also made battle seamless. For some reason it's way more jarring for me going into the "fight section" when it's the brawler gameplay.

Disagree. The combat in the other games doesn't interest me at all. Loved LAD, tried Yakuza 0 and just wasn't into the combat whatsoever. Infinite Wealth has been fantastic though. Both LAD and Infinite Wealth are some of the best games I've played this decade.

I get where you're coming from though, I feel similarly about Final Fantasy which has done the opposite. Can't stand the combat in those games anymore despite it being a franchise I used to love.
