Difficulty is fine. A bit on the easy side actually. Largely depends on how much side content you do though, just rush straight through the main story and you may end up a bit underleveled making it harder. Do too much side content and you'll be overleveled making it too easy.
It very highly depends on how much side content you engage with, of which there is a LOT and it's better included than in the previous game.
As for the difficulty curve it feels much smoother than in the previous game. For multiple reasons such as: better rewards across the board for side content/goofy stuff, the xp rewards feel less punishing than before, the optional grind dungeons get you up in xp extremely fast and the story battles are regularly marked in terms of level and gear requirement.
Overall I find that the difficulty comes mostly from being undergeared rather than xp in this game. If you ever struggle it's most likely that you haven't changed your gear recently (such as trying a new job you have 0 weapon for, that's a big no no for example).
All in all I'd say the story is about the same length as in the last game but without stupid forced grind towards the end (I haven't finished the game yet, but from what the reviews said it was fine too and I'm a bit overleveled already soooo I doubt I'll struggle).
i cant progress with the main story because of that addictive island. lol
About difficulty: it depends on what's difficult for you.
Most of the time in video game, it is about number for example AC Valhalla on the hardest mode, a zealot can kill you in one move while you will need 20+ hits to defeat him.
Nothing diifficult it is just time consuming: wait for an opening 2-3 hits then step back and when you know your stuff you can counter for a longer opening.
Same thing goes here, the difference is that it is turn base. meaning tough guys (pink/magenta) will start the turn and even if you're using perfect guard, Ichiban will not survive the second tough guy, end the battle or pray that IA target some other party member.
Bad news if you don't buy their DLC, no difficulty settings and you can deal some good damage to tough guys with the right item.
If you actually watch all the cut scenes, it would already take you close to 10 hours just to get to chapter 3.
Dang so like a 20 hr speedrun? That's a lotta game!
