Minigames
Are there a lot of them?
What prevented me from getting into the earlier Yakuza titles were the, in my opinion, excessive minigames.
Is this still the case?

More than ever.
There's more now than there was then.
Gotcha, thanks for the responses.
How mandatory are they to the game? Are they part of any main-story questline?

They traded out staples for newer things. What they should have done is included the staples as well. All the gambling—Japanese and Western—all the retro arcade games, all the mahjong, all the pachinko, etc.

FFS, this game has exactly as much shogi as every game for the last 8+ years has had. Why? Same reason why mahjong and retro arcade games are an afterthought this time: Because keeping that content the same, as opposed to reducing or increasing it, was the laziest option. Laziest option wins. Putting in a trophy system for mahjong would have taken another half hour of effort. Tossing in a couple of heretofore unseen SEGA arcade games, like Quartet, Galaxy Force II, Pengo, Bank Panic, Frogger, Wonder Boy, Golden Axe, Altered Beast... that would have taken an hour of additional effort. Would have been super easy and license-free, and really fleshed out the barren arcade, but nope.
Still wondering if the minigames are skipable or not.

More or less, on Yakuza 6 for example you need do a especial baseball session to get a npc to help with a thing, sorry spoilers.
Usually you need if you want money here you may need do a "couple of events"

I'm at the part where you go through Jeffs ♥♥♥♥♥♥ tacos. The only mandatory minigame so far is the delivery one, and you only need to play that one once.

As someone who works in software development, he's 100% correct. The increased pricing and the greedy model doesn't warrant this lack of effort. When FF7 remake chap 2 comes out and GTA: VI. See how much better quality of games they are and focus of detail there is in comparison to this game and tell me if it really was worth it? It's the principle and those arguing or defending are the enablers.
