This is everybody's hope. My gaming group are all hoping for a mod that inserts Japanese Kiryu into the English version (I wouldn't call it a dub as the facial animations are tailored to the language)
I feel Yong being hired was because of two things. One - Darryl is pretty much retired. He voiced Kiryu only twice - first in 2005 for Yakuza 1 and a handful of lines in Like a Dragon. Most of the Yakuza games didn't have english voice overs. In the post where he approved of Yong, he stated Yong was a "Dedicated actor". Darryl at the moment isn't. Two - in that same exact post, he states "a dedicated actor who more closely matches Kiryu's culture." I feel that's a not-so-subtle nod to the West's current desire to make sure a voice actor's race fits the character. I find that absolutely stupid, but it's a big possibility that's what happened here.
Anyways for me personally, I watch Yong's vids quite a bit so it's hard for me to not hear him when listening to Kiryu. But I'll probably stick to the English dub for the majority of the game because I did so with Like a Dragon and it kinda spoiled me. Was nice actually understanding the little vocal cues that don't have subtitles, and I really enjoy Ichiban's English VA Kaiji Tang.
Will probably switch to JP though during Kiryu's "Bucket List" sidequests. It'd feel wrong not to.
I had a feeling somebody would eventually bring this up.
Think about what you're saying. Try to imagine the opposite scenario. One or another of those two says they're kind of meh on the casting. It would have been an absolute SH--SHOW. Which anyone with an Intuition of 1 could predict. Which in turn makes these "endorsements" 100.00% meaningless—purely for show, for the handful of people who were legitimately seeking assurances AND didn't even possess that Intuition of 1.
This is some DLC I'd pay for.
It's as if you just picked two sentences out of my whole entire post and went with it without any context towards the rest of it. Not at all surprised. This wasn't a defense towards Yong's casting. It was an explanation. And whether it was RGG or Sega who did the casting (You don't know at all who officially OK'd his casting, stop acting like you do. Basing your rant on a "NEAR CERTAINTY" is dumb), the explanation still holds water.
And if you had read a bit more carefully instead of gotten mad, you would've noticed I wasn't showcasing which side I was on at all. "Think about what you're saying" I was giving direct information and speculations buddy, not opinions. My opinion was the final paragraph, and it was purely towards what dub I was going to use. The only other opinion I made was about voice actors having to be the same race as the character they're voice acting which, from the sound of your rant about localization, we both agree is stupid. I swear people try to get into a dumb useless internet argument all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time nowadays.
Not gonna waste time with an argument especially when I wasn't going for one, so don't expect an answer back if you try to argue some more. Gonna go play this video game now.
Why is Yong Yea doing some... weird old timey 'Gumshoe' accent?
He may as well drop a Hey sweetheart, I like the cut of your jib since it sounds so hilariously out-of-character and not at all what he's sounded like all this time. Way too young also.
I decided to reserve judgement and not jump on the hate-wagon until hearing it firsthand myself but yeah.. wow it really is that bad.
I would also use a Kiryu-only Japanese replacement mod if I could.
It really does stick out though. I'm used to him being a couple of octaves lower, maybe 4.
He's trying to be a tough sounding Yong Yea instead of Kiryu.
