Kiryu Voice Options
I don't want this to turn into why some of us dislike the new voice actor. For me its the delivery. However I want to discuss my situation/idea.

I've played every Yakuza game in Japanese. Sure I don't have a choice in some, yet it is my favorite way to play. The raw emotion in Japanese dialogue is so impactfull. Plus, Kiryu's voice actor is simply the best.

Like a Dragon was the first game in the series I played in English. Reason being is that the English voice actor for Ichi nailed that performance, and for once I enjoy it over the Japanese actor. Now for my idea.

I would love a way to keep the cast and the game in English yet have only Kiryu speak Japanese. I know that sounds crazy, but maybe it can be a lore thing. Like Kiryu is a traditionalist or something. I doubt the devs have considered this so maybe its something a mod can do.

Would you all be open to that idea? Any modders out there?

In the end it would give me and possibly others the best of both worlds.

The big thing with doing that kind of option is it might cause some sync issues with the script. I don't think it's a bad idea, but it's more work than you think to implement.

Wish I never played Yakuza 7 in English. Might give it another play in Japanese to get 'used to' the voices, because damn Kiryu really does sound like absolute trash in English. Wild to me that they gave an important role of a 50+ year old yakuza to a babyman with barely any experience in VO.

Yongyea's usually fine. This is likely a failure of direction.

What's sad in Kiryu had a fine English voice in 7, but that was to bring back his OG English VA who had terrible direction at the time to show he could do better. Guessing he didn't want to continue though.

i do feel there is some diffrence with the script between the voice options, for example in 7, the part where ichi pull the bat and enemies "transform", in english adachi say something like "this isent a game you know" while in japanese he is saying "too much gaming, mr, unemployed" with the text to match, so likely even if there would be a mod to put JP kiryu in english, you would still need to dig and modify script files to match the dialouge, not to mention pre-rendered cutscenes or in game cutscenes with motion capture are not something you can mess with as much.

i'll never understand why people would prefer constant over the top childrens saturday morning presentor voice acting in english over the japanese source.

ive played them all in japanese except 7 which i was so impressed with Ichibans english voice actor that i played it all through english and it did not disappoint. Im gonna play Infinite wealth in english, Il deal with it, if ichiban is just as good as 7 then im going english

100 percent my issue. Ichiban in English makes me want to suffer through Kiryu in English

Same. Only Yakuza title I played in English because he truly nailed it. I'm going English this time as well.

I sure hope someone makes a mod that replaces Kiryu's voice with the JP one while playing in english dub. Everyone else is fine, just not him. I'm a yongyea fan and I'll say that this man can not voice act. Or rather, he just doesn't fit the role of a man nearing his 60s. That other new guy with the glasses, him he could've voiced, but not Kiryu. Not his fault, though, but rather the person who signed him...

I played a lot of LAD7 in English to try it out...and then just hard stopped when Majima and others from previous games made their appearances. Their voices just sounded so completely wrong to me. I noped out pretty much from Majima's opening line.

It is likely just what I am used to. Characters that I have played for so many games are supposed to sound a certain way. It doesn't matter how good a replacement voice actor is going to be when you've got certain voices in your head for who a character is.

So, while I have not yet heard YongYea's take on Kiryu's voice, I probably wouldn't be a fan just because it wouldn't matter who voiced him, it would still sound "wrong" to me. Not because of his performance per se, but just because it wouldn't sound like me.
