So torches burn out, and can't be replenished.
Coming from Skullkeep, this is a welcome change of pace. Nothing wrong with Skullkeep's whole "put torch in brazier to fully refresh duration" thing, mind.

However, it begs the question, is there an alternative light source? Maybe a magic spell like Skullkeep had? Theoretically you could run out of torches, and be stuck in darkness. Not exactly a favorable situation.

If you have a mage, you can put 5 points into Spellcraft to learn "Light," which helps a LOT. Alternatively, you can replace torches that are about to go out back into a brazier; not only will they give off full light, but they won't go out as long as they're in the brazier. :)

I'm assuming I have to actually locate the scroll first?
EDIT: Nope, don't need to. Just need to know the runes.

Makes sense, good to know. Then again, dunno how often I'd need to return to areas I've already cleared... Although I suppose I could just keep a bunch of torches that are "dim" in my inventory since it looks like they don't burn down unless in hand.

I got into the habit of taking torches of walls fairly often. I usually had 3-4 torches in my inventory at all times, and never ran the risk of running out. You *should* be fine with only carrying a spare or two.

And the light spell is nice, but be aware that it's a different kind of light than the torches give off. The light from the spell is more bluish, and is stronger in a smaller area. I generally tried to have the spell up and a torch in hand at all times, which greatly increases the lighting.

Sorry I didn't respond to your question Hexerin; for some reason Steam didn't auto-subscribe me to the discussion.
@Hexerin: Yes to everything you said. That's the one thing I wish they'd done differently, that as long as you have the skill points, you can cast any spell without locating the scroll. They even have multiples of the same scroll spread throughout the dungeon, and you don't even need them. :P
@Chebs: Excellent points.

Good information. I just started playing and the tutorial is laughable.

When I come across a torch in a room, I usually swap it out for the one I had been using. While the torches seem to stay lit forever while housed in a sconce, they don't appear to "recharge" if you replace them in my experience.

I remember grabbing a "used" torch I had previously placed in a sconce (was stuck thinking about a puzzle :) and to my surprise, it kept its previous charge and went out in about 1 minute. haha

You should check the manual as well. It has some more information on magic in Grimrock as well as other interesting bits.

There's an orb you can find about mid-way which can be used as a light source roughly half-way into the game when equipped. It has the same kind of light as the mage's "light" spell and you'll probably keep it around until end game if you have a mage since an orb/staff can be in each hand. Saves you from having to recast light every so often. Beware that if a torch goes out in your hand that it won't light in a sconce. If it has a shimmer left it will still burn so long as it's on the wall though. Personally I just kept the orb equipped the rest of the game and never used torches again except for some puzzles that required them.

EDIT: The orb of radiance is found on the 6th level in the "Vault of the Orb" area at the end of the hall.
