Out of Phase - Complete a Phasic Dial after clicking the same button 59 times
The oddly specific number should clue you in that this is no random challenge. You need to find a phasic dial where a single button controls at least three dials, of 4, 5, and 6 vertices, where the 4 and 6 sided dials need to be controlled with a +1 or +3 and +1 or +5 rotations repsectively. Those are already specific constraints, but after you find such a thing you need to further play with the board in such a way, as to be in a position as if you clicked the button after solving the puzzle (without actually solving it). At that point you are 1 rotation into the 60 rotation cycle, and thus 59 clicks away from solving the Phasic Dial. Really fun and different way to look at these
Flowing Like Water - Obtain a time of more than a second under a grandmaster time, outside of Enclaves.
While this can't be done on many courses (especially if you're having server issues), I've stumbled into quite a handful that you can complete with over a second to spare, providing a good challenge while limiting frustration since some courses are obviously impossible under this constraint. The Enclaves clause is there to prevent usage of the Flow Orb tutorial enclave, even if it would provide a nice and consistent spawn for this
Sentinel Solutions - Treat solutions to 3 Sentinel Stones as if they were Stones themselves
This one's a bit meta and is meant to reflect a bit of the mysteries the game provides. It might seem imposible with game's randomness, but I'm fairly sure it should be always do-able inside of the Vault of the Vitric
Temple of Infinite Speed - In Temple of Infinite Rings, complete 20 rings in under a minute
There are a few different options for this challenge: Solve multiple rings in a single glide, or 2 rings from the same position. But a lot of them get trivialized by existence of Temple of Infinite Rings, so challenge needs to either exclude or embrace it. I went with the latter, and tested that it's doable. It's very hard, but 20 rings is just barely manageable, and it's at the limits of what the temple can do with its respawning speed
Multi-Matcher - Pair up five matchboxes without moving
It's possible, though slightly depends on what matchboxes spawn in. Lucent Waters is great for lining up many at once
Quick Roller - Roll over more than 50 unique tiles in under 5 seconds
I did test this one, and it should be doable with large enough boards and blocks. But this is intended to be impossible if you don't use shift to speed up the rolling. Making the player figure it out as a possibility (if they didn't already) from the realization that it's physically impossible to do this challenge at regular rolling speeds.
A Rather Calm Hike - Pass through an arch in every region, without jumping or using fast travel
This isn't meant to be as difficult as others, though traversal does provide some challenge here and there (and if you exclude geysers, it requires you to route from Serene Deluge to Shady Wildwood through Verdent Glen, which naturally makes you go through most of the game). The main point of this achievement is to get players to run on the ground, and see some things that they might otherwise miss if they constantly glide above the lands. Also the words of the achievement name spell A.R.C.H.
Cube Collector - Click on 5 random hidden cubes in under 30 seconds
Cubes are rough for challenges because cube-based Enclaves/Trials are carpetted with them, while in the overworld they are a pain to find. I settled on the above as it allows the player to find the cubes without clicking and then the challenge becomes to path between them and click them in time. Something completely different, utilizing what the game has to create a new type of experience. That being said, I don't know how consistently you can actually do it in the 30s limit.
Hidden Pentad Pentad - Find the fifth relic of 5 hidden pentads across five different regions in under 5 minutes
Like the previous one, this one has a trick to it where it requires you to pre-prepare the Pentads before the timer "starts". Knowing where to go and where to click the 5th one to complete each pentad. Also, achievement has five "5's" in the description, written in four different ways.
These aren't Glide Rings - Pass through 5 hidden rings without touching the ground
As with the cubes, this would require pre-planning of the route, and likely only allow a few attempts per day. That's far from optimal, but with the significant amount of vertical distance from Serene Deluge to Verdant Glen (and possibly allowed usage of geysers) this challenge is more about fun than difficulty
Photographic Memory - Complete a SightSeer in under 5 seconds
Not easy, but sensibly do-able challenge. An alternate possibility would be something like "Solve 10 sightseers without using right click" which while not hard, would subtly hint at the mechanic of right-clicking during sightseers to make them easier.
Incomplete, but not Uncompletable - Complete all Light Motifs in Shattered Library
While you do get a Mirabilis for this, I think this gimmick is so fun it deserves an achievement. And I couldn't think of anything else for Light Motifs
Double Echo - Have two Wandering Echoes active at once, and solve them both.
I don't like this achievement, because you can 'easily' get it on accident during Dance of the Fireflies, while out in the world it requires luck with placement and "lookahead knowledge" of the movement of the echoes. Still, it's not impossible, especially in open and echo-dense areas like Lucent Waters
Jack Of All Trades - Solve every type of Logic Box in a row
I'll be honest, I had no idea how to do a challenge fo any of the logic boxes, so I opted to bring them all together into this. Ideally, this challenge would require them to do four different boxes in the span of four puzzles solved, meaning players would have to avoid hidden rings/arches, and resist the urge to puzzle out other stuff. Additionally, a time limit can be added to make it more interesting.
Rainbow of Shyness - Solve four different colors of Shy Auras without scaring any
This achievement has problems. First of all, it is very easy to unknowingly scare a shy aura that's behind a wall/rock. Secondly, green auras are extremely uncommon (likely due to being trivial if you see green from afar) so requiring them for a one-time challenge would be painful. In fact, white auras are by far the most common, but you can't do all types of them without scaring some, or getting lucky. Secondly, it's extremely easy to accidentally trigger shy auras, especially the blue ones. Better suggestions are welcome
Mosaic Mastery - Solve every Shifting Mosaic in the Shifting Scales Enclave
I'll be honest, I had no clue what to do. Shifting Mosaics suffer from not being good puzzles to do a timed/flawless challenge on, they're often short and straightforward, and a lot of them share the same solution (if you abstract the shapes a bit). On the contrary, the Enclave ones are often really good headscratchers with some unique ideas that I wish appeared more across the mainland
Wrong Match - Match two matchboxes with the same symbol from different pairs
This is actually super fun, as it will likely require you to scour multiple regions for overlapping symbols tha are in an open enough area to snipe from far away
SightSeeing - Pick up a SightSeer lens, and complete every other puzzle type before finding the lenses location
This is maybe not something I'd do multiple times, but it is a neat one-off challenge that requires some knowledge of the world, since you can't open the map while holding a lens
Still Sentinels - Solve a set of Sentinel Stones without moving
This sounds trickier than it is. The intent is that you need to observe the puzzle from above without stepping on the platform, and then fall right into the spot where the solution exists. It's actually a good way to get a different angle at a Sentinel puzzle if you're struggling!
Amarillo Sniper - Complete an Amarillo Ring from over 100 meters away
These also aren't Glide Rings - Complete two sets of Amarillo Rings during a single glide
Two for the price of one - Collect a hidden puzzle while inside of a puzzle box
This one requires you to use the preserved momentum you get when entering puzzle boxes (or any other static puzzle) to collect a hidden ring/arch with your player hitbox
It's also worth noting that there is a fair few locations with permanent star-difficulty puzzles. They aren't tied to progression or trials, but I thought it's worth to reward the player for at least some of them.
Puzzle of the Depths - Solve a Large Grid at the lowest point of Verdant Glen
The Flow of Lucent Waters - Solve the 5-star grid in Lucent Waters
The Forbidden Patterns - Solve the Large Grid underneath Autumn Falls
The location for this one is under the southern tip of the region, and the name is a reference to some insight you'll need in order to solve it
Temple of Symbols - Solve both Large Grids at the foot of a temple in Shaded Wildwood
Children of the Sky - Solve both Large Grids at the very top of Serene Deluge
Returning Scholar - Solve 20 puzzles on the path to the Shattered Library
This is an oddball one, but is intended to point players towards the puzzles that spawn North-East of the Lucent Waters fast travel point. Every few hours the game will spawn 3 puzzles there, of difficulty 5-10. This achievement essentially requires the player to consistently complete decently difficult puzzles. The 20 is a bit on the grindy side, but it's an area from early in the game, and it's nothing compared to thousands of puzzle boxes spread throughout the lands.
Now, I am of course limited in my suggestions to what is in the game right now. Being the devs of the game, it is in their power to add and re-use stuff to create future content for the game, including extra options for achievements. Some examples are offered below, with increasing complexity:
A root motif? - Create a light motif out of an unusual material
A lot of the roots in the game form a ton of right angles. They're asking to be made into a Light Motif somewhere
Jack of Every Trait - Complete/Score high in puzzle gauntlet
This would require introduction of a puzzle gauntlet that requires the player to solve most if not all types of puzzles. Details of implementation are beyond the scope of this post, cause there is a lot of options
Tricky Wanderers - Capture 10 tricky Wandering Echoes
One of the enclaves tells us that sometimes, a Wandering Echo is too fast to catch without warps. But outside of that island, nowhere in the game are there warps. It would be interesting to have some "tricky Echoes" (perhaps differently coloreda and/or permanent) that do require gimmicky movement in order to beat it to its destination
Match Dictionary - Match every matchbox symbol possible
This would require addition of some sort of "Dictionary" that keeps track of various symbols and their meaning. Because yes, they do have a meaning, at least some of them. Could be a neat thing
Devil is in the Details - Solve 50 environmental logic grids
The high number of this challenge is intended, as I think environmental grids deserve to have a much more significantly larger spread than they currently do. I realize the challenges associated with that, but they're the coolest logic grids, while also being the least common
A secret Enclave - Unlock the secret Enclave
Intentionally undescriptive achievement that acts as a pointer rather than a solution. "Something's hidden" and the player has to figure out what. What I have in mind is some interaction with the swirly pad West of Lucent Waters fast travel point, unlocking an extra difficult enlave like The Highest Viewpoint
Vault of the Aurorals - Reach the central chamber of the Vault of the Aurorals
There is a lot of mechniacs in this game, but there still can be more. Endgame really peters out, and with that so do achievements you can complete. As such, having a secondary vault that mixes a lot of the puzzle types would be an incredible send-off the game could do. Rolling blocks that act as Sentinel stones when standing upwards. Match-3's that when matched remove/add tiles to a puzzle grid. Phasic Dials whose rotation depends on the touching of blocks in a Shifting Mosaic. Possibilities are plentiful, but they require a lot of effort. Would deserve an achievement for completion, and it would be the closest to "you finished the game" achievement as you can get
It is possible that the game has secrets yet undiscovered. If that's the case then those would most certainly deserve achievements, even if just as a pointer to go looking for something. That being said, I can't know what's not known, so I'm going off of the assumption that everything to find has been found, and the suspicious anomalies are leftovers from development and/or set-up for future events/updates.
Simultaneous Pentads - Complete two Hidden Pentads, without collecting two relics of the same Pentad in a row.
This might seem like an innocent little achievement, but it actually becomes an annoying chore. Pentads are decently rare, meaning you will likely need to move a considerable distance from one to the other after every relic. It's just annoying for no reason. Heck, even if they're pretty close you still can only have one pentad open at a time, so you keep jumping between them, spawning the sphere of searching, find one, ignore all the others you might've found nearby, go for the other pentad, rinse and repeat. 9 times. There is negative value in this achievement, it only takes time for the arbitrary "Achievement Gained" sound
No Insight Needed - Complete X grids of X difficulty without using Insights
This seems like an innocent one, but it fails in a few subtle ways. If you set the goal as a lot of grids completed, it becomes a grind. But you can find boxes all over the place that are trivial to solve, so something more is needed to be an achievement-worthy task. Naturally, you'd ask for higher difficulties, but even difficulty 5 stuff is hard to find, not to mention 6+. I don't even know if there are any random spawns of difficulty 9-10 (4-5 stars) beyond the Lucent Waters shattered library path. And the static spawns, once complete, stay complete. And you know the answer anyways. And besides, you can cheat this so easily with external guides/help, that it does not show any significant achievement, despite seeming like it does. On top of that, I do think people shouldn't be shamed for using an Insight to help themselves out, as it is much much better than looking up a solution online.
Circle of Bubbles - Solve an Ethereal Skydrop
In case you're not aware, Ethereal Skydrops are these very hard to see skydrops that appear very rarely. They give out 1,000XP and are quite the treat when you spot them. Problem is, they're stupid rare, and this is a multiplayer game where someone else can snatch the skydrop from in front of you. And I don't know how rare the Ethereal Skydrops actually are, but having only found 3 across 150 hours it sounds like a painful achievement to try and luck out on.
Shape Clicker - Solve every shape of Skdrop
In similar vein to above, Skydrops are not actually always circles. They can be triangles, stars, rhombuses, or celtic knots. Those special shapes give 150 XP, as opposed to typical 50 XP, though unlike Ethereal Skydrop that increased amount can be affected by a skydrop speed multiplier. But there really is hardly anything special beyond that. They're hard to spot from the outside, completely random to try and find, and ultimately do not differ significantly in challenge from typical skydrops. There is no need for an achievement for clicking them all, unless a way to ensure a special spawn exists
Early to the Party - Enter an Enclave before you unlock it
This would be a really fun achievement, especially given the game already recognizes if you do this! However, if you unlock all Enclaves before realizing this achievement is a thing, then you are hard locked out of it, since you can't make a new save file. Not bueno
Full of Insight - Complete the Insight section of your Encyclopedia
In theory, this is a good way to motivate players to learn how different mechanics impact different puzzles, especially the Logic Grids. However, unlocking these insights is tied to solving specific puzzles, which is really not intuitive. You might've explored majority of the game but missed a few puzzles in an Enclave, and thus be missing that insight (happened to me). Add to that the glitchy state of Encyclopedia at the moment, and it might be best to not rely on anything within for achievement completion.
Trailblazer - Unlock your first Trail Extension
I really like the tral extensions. They're a reward that you get after considerable effort, and one that can be easily seen by anyone you pass by. However, the "considerable effort" to get them is grindy as heck, and borderline mindless in a lot of cases. Especially considering players would go the path of least resistance if this was an achievement and do stuff like "hidden objects in favorite biome" or Morphing Fractals in Lucent Waters. It's an already unfun achievement, made even less fun by wanting to get the achievment. The trail extension is reward enough for the grind.
Unlock STUFF - Achievements regarding leveling up, unlocking upgrades, cosmetics, and/or equipping them.
While not necessarily bad, this also isn't really good. All of those things are rewards themselves, so there is no need for an achievment on top of them. Especially given it will make people try and optimize the fun out of it, repeating the most lucrative/easiest puzzles just to get the level-up/sparks to get the requirements for the achievement
However, playtime is not the only thing that matters. By not having a good end-point, players will keep meandering about the world, solving puzzles and playing the game. But this will get repetetive, mundane, and will drown out all the memories of the fantastic puzzles you can find in the static locations like Enclaves, PoIs, and Mysteries. Achievements are a great way to direct the post-game, and tell the player "you played enough. You can move on now" after they see majority of the content. It doesn't mean you're shooing the players away, nor that they'll stop playing. But it does provide a certain psychological closure that will result in better memories of this game.
So if you've done everything the game has to offer look through the list and see if trying to do these suits your fancy. Maybe if the game doesn't give you achievements, you can do it yourself, before moving on to fresh new experiences.
…you’re insane, btw.
Matching Master;
Sounds good!
The Walls Are Lava;
Some of the walls are nearly invisible, especially when using one of the jump pads. Finding a 3 floor maze requires some luck, and god forbid another player gets near you causing you to rubberband into a wall. The only redeeming factor here is the very generous time limits in mazes, with which you can go really slow.
SpeedDrop;
Just, please no. You'd need to be very lucky to find enough skydrops near eachother to even attempt to do this. Then you need extra luck to have them close enough to be able to do them quickly enough to keep the boost on. THEN even more luck that no other player is going for any of the skydrops you need. Luck based achievements really have no place in this game.
Fractal Perfectionist;
I'd go for 3 in a row. Trying 10 is too much. Some fractals are easy enough, but there are some that require near pixel perfect precision. Then there are some that look like you've solved them but aren't solved, with no visible differences. These would break your streak without mercy.
Glide Racer;
I like this one. I have no idea how tight the 1 minute limit is, but a little room for imperfect flight should be allowed, without being too forgiving for simple bad flying.
Out of Phase;
Too luck dependant to even find a puzzle like this. As typed before, luck has no place in a game like this.
Flowing like Water;
Sounds good, but will be extremly luck based to find a puzzle where this is possible. Basically you'd need to fly all over the world, every day, try every flow orb and pray that it's one where a second is possible.
Sentinel Solutions;
Not entirely sure what you mean here
Multi-Matcher;
Too luck based. I have done quite a few Matchboxes, and NEVER have seen 5 that could be solved from the same spot.
A Rather Calm Hike;
This is a fun one, but seems a bit of a random thing to do.
Cube Collector;
Too luck based. The 30 seconds is very hard as well.
Hidden Pentad Pentad;
Not a fan of this one, but it sounds doable. Why not just 5 pentads in a row?
These aren't Glide Rings;
Five might be a bit much. These things usually are around solid objects and are impossible to glide through without losing too much height.
Photographic Memory;
Within 5 seconds?? Just no, please. Physically impossible for a lot of them to even get close to the right spot in time, let alone wiggle about to find the exact spot.
Incomplete, but not Incompletable;
Meh, Mirabilis is enough.
Double Echo;
How would you know in advance where both echo's end? The only way to know where they stop is to complete them. The only echo's that end close enough are in Dance of the Fireflies, but what if you've already completed that one?
Jack of All trades;
Sounds good. Might even add increasing difficulty, from 1 dot to 4 dots in increasing order. Not higher, because those puzzles seems to be in limited supply.
Rainbow of Shyness;
Incredibly luck based. And will be really frustrating. The only place where these things are in abundance is where there's a lot of plateaus, drops and jumps, making it even harder to get close to some.
Mosaic Mastery;
One mirabilis for these tough puzzles seems a little underwhelming. Adding an achievement here might be good!
----------
Wrong Match;
Indeed a fun one. I was thinking of " Solve a Matchbox while in the air" myself :)
SightSeeing;
Fun :)
Still Sentinels;
The amount of precision you need makes this not viable for a lot of Sentinels. With aircontrol being a bit wonky this will likely be very frustrating.
Amarillo Sniper;
Yes, this is fun :)
These also aren't glide ring;
Sounds good, but feels a bit odd.
Two for the price of one;
Meh. Very luck based.
I'm in favor of unlock-based achievements though. After Vault of the Vitric, there's nothing to to but grind masteries and grind for cosmetics. While it's a bit fun for a while, it's currently too much of a grind to do without any rewards (cosmetics are rewards of course, but most of them aren't something you'd equip).
But perhaps the grinding is too much even for an achievement.
This is actually more do-able than you give it credit for! It's hard and requires RNG luck, however with how often skydrops respawn it's not uncommon for enough of them to be in close enough proximity to get 10 in a row for the 100% boost. I do agree that the timing is tighter than I'd like, but given you can pre-plan routes and use the custom fast travel marker; it's more about execution than luck
I intended this to say either 3 in a row or 10 total. The reason I didn't go with 3 in a row is that going into a puzzle, it becomes hard to say if it'll be easy to do or nigh impossible, which might lead to a fair few angry broken streaks when you enter a puzzle only to see it's impossibly hard to figure out
Again, less luck based than it might seem! Almost all Phasic Dials will have 3+ dials, and a significant majority of puzzles will have a button rotating 3 of them. With how many puzzles there are around, I'm willing to bet this achievement is do-able on multiple slabs at any given time. When testing, It took me 3 wall slabs to find one where this could be done. And since they're very easy to spot and check for this without solving the dials themselves, I think the search adds to the achievement
Your goal in sentinel stones is to stand in a spot where all stones are visible. Now imagine there is a statue of you in that spot. The achievements asks you to stand in a spot, where three of those 'statues' are visible unobscured. This is possible with my solutions to the VotV Sentinel Stones, but I'm not sure how unique those solutions actually are
You've probably seen a few without realizing, but I agree that 5 seems like a bit much, even though I have specifically went in-game and confirmed it's possible. Something like 3 might be less luck dependent, 4 is already on the line
when testing, I did this by going from the top of the pyramid in Verdant Glen, and grabbing rings on the outskirs of both the region and the pyramid. doable without a problem, and there are areas in Serene Deluge and Autumn Falls where this is also doable quite reasonably. The main problem is that you have to not collect those rings beforehand
Despite having done this multiple times, I'm inclined to agree that probably swapping this one to solving the puzzles with/without the right click would be a better use of the achievement slot
Yeah, this one's problematic, though not impossible. Some echoes are very lenient and give you enough time to go on a small detour. A little over half of the time you can tell when an echo reached its last point (returned to the start or is in a position that makes sense as an ending) letting you do a detour and trigger a different Echo. But then you're less "solving them at the same time" and more"Chaining echoes together" at which point it could be more fun to have an achievement that requires you to follow 2-3 echoes while only allowing a small amount of time not following an echo
This (and frankly, most achievements) are not meant to be do-able on every single puzzle you see. Part of the fun is to hunt down a location/puzzle that lets you do the "achievement quest"
Not really? Hidden rings/arches are all over the place and so are the puzzle boxes. All you need is to find a good spot, line up, and get the movement right. And if you miss, you can just leave the puzzle box, see where you ended up, and correct the movement from there.
The game is designed to be played across many many days, getting new puzzles every day. And while I'm fine with that and enjoy it to an extent, I would not enjoy having a goal of "get this final achievement" be gated behind some of the cosmetic grinds, because there are things in this game that will require (on average) over a decade to complete, despite there 'only' being around 300-500 hours worth of puzzles (rough approximation)
It's possible to do them right. But by proposing to do them in the first place it very easily invites itself do be done wrong. So I think it's best to avoid them entirely, as for the veteran players, the trail extension should be reward enough. It's quite fun having a massive trail following you, and it only gets longer the more of the game you complete
