Hero and Housing Levels

I might be missing something somewhere, but what does levelling up heroes and housing even do?

It gives you rewards in the form of extra matter and blueprints upon completing the loop. Plus, you'll also get achievements for leveling them up to level 10 which gives you even more matter/blueprints.
