The joke is that Unic is a homophone (meaning it sounds the same) for Eunich (a castrated man).

The joke, then, is that Unic is male. . . but given his costume colors, long hair, and more - is also a bit feminie, because of his gender ambiguity.

At least, that's how I've always interpreted it.

well the unic eunich pun has always seemed obvious to me. I'm more concerned about the gender of unic. Because Females can't really be castrated :P
