How does online Coop work!?!?

"Local and online multiplayer! Can you have 2 players on a couch against 2 other players on the internet? Yes of course!"

I can get couch 2 player working but with the online modes I can't activate a second slot - they're just filling up with other online players.

Is there a technique to this? Let me know!

Make a custom match, join a slot with your friend then open the other slots for online people
