I am in zone 2, and I remember that I could research engine... But I can't.

Only lvl 2 I can research is Blaster.

When can I research better stuff in the Steam version?

are you just in zone2, or did you finish zone 1? Found the alien base yet?

Yeah, I found the alien base and got 100% up to zone 4 now, but then, I could research more only in the next zone... Might be related to the fact that I played a previous update non-steam ages ago...

For those still wondering ( I know this is an old post ), research options ( In normal / hard ) are opened up when you defeat the mothership in each zone ( beating zone 2 opens up next tier of research options ).

This is separate from the technology you get from doing favors for the allied aliens in each zone.

I am having the exact same issue, I killed the Zone 1 mothership and the tier 2 research options won't open up for me. I can only get Blasters level 2. I even went back to a previous saved game just to kill the mothership again, just to see if it would unlock this time. It didn't. I am playing on Hard difficulty btw.
