General FAQ
What is 1-900-CULT?

1-900-CULT is a mod for Hotline Miami 1, created with permission from Dennaton Games and Devolver Digital. Take on the roles of cultists, and cult busters, as they play out The Horror on Palm Drive.

Is this free?

1-900-CULT is completely free. 1-900-CULT is a fully non-commercial project, we haven’t made a dime from this throughout development. However, ownership of Hotline Miami 1 is required.

What kind of soundtrack does this feature?

1-900-CULT features a pulse-pounding soundtrack of more than 40 tracks by several artists. Our soundtrack is varied and features some songs which deviate heavily from the traditional synthwave vibe of Hotline Miami 1 and 2. Our soundtrack is darker, a bit edgier, but nevertheless forceful and violent. All tracks in 1-900-CULT are used with permission from the original artist(s), and we strongly encourage you to support the official releases.

Was this something else?/Why did the name change?

Many of you may already be aware, but prior to this Steam business, 1-900-CULT went by the name "The Miami Horror". We felt it was necessary to change the name for a variety of reasons, the most notable being the similarities to an existing synthpop band. We also felt that a new title was needed to better capture the attitude of the game, the old name had begun to sound stale and vague compared to our vision of the project. Lastly, we deemed it necessary to mark a more clear separation of our project from the original Hotline Miami, to avoid confusion.

Although rebranded, 1-900-CULT is still very much the same project, with the same general direction. In fact, with this rebrand, we’ve moved closer to what originally inspired this game in terms of atmosphere.

Is this like Hotline Miami 1, or 2?

Neither, and both. 1-900-CULT strikes out to have its own unique tone and setting, while paying homage visually and thematically to the original Hotline Miami games. 1-900-CULT is set deep in the 90s, and takes cues from slasher, grindhouse, and giallo flicks. For the gameplay, we were inspired by the original games and sought to include what made both great in their own ways. All together we have created a new experience that aims to push the envelope of what is possible in Hotline Miami.

Players should expect an overall much more difficult campaign than Hotline Miami 1, or 2. But, care has been taken to create a fair and smooth difficulty curve which should make 1-900-CULT accessible to new and returning players alike.

Are the controls the same?

Some controls have changed, special abilities are their own input bound to Middle Mouse, and lock on is now Q. Other changes include ‘Look’ always being on, with holding Shift turning it off. All keyboard and mouse controls can be rebound, and mouse sensitivity is modifiable. 1-900-CULT also features full controller support.

How long is it?

1-900-CULT is ‘full length’, which we consider to be about 16 levels. We’re aiming for the first playthrough to be between 4 and 7 hours. But, depending on prior experience, your mileage will vary. There will also be unique content available only in additional playthroughs, including hardmode levels, new playstyles, and secrets. Some of this content may only become available following updates after the main release.

There's Co-op? How's that work?

Alongside the singleplayer campaign, there will also be a separate co-operative campaign, which may only become available following a post-release content update.

This co-operative mode is split-screen only, and supports two players. Players can use a combination of keyboard and controller, or two controllers. Due to engine limitations, our game does not support multiple keyboards and mice (even if they are virtual).

There is no online connectivity or matchmaking support. However, our game does have Steam Remote Play enabled, and any desktop streaming service that supports virtual controllers should work with 1-900-CULT. Our co-op campaign levels are designed with the limitations of desktop streaming in mind.

The co-op campaign is not playable in singleplayer.

Co-operative mode will also be made available for editor levels. Editor users will have full freedom over what characters and playstyles are available in their co-op levels.

Can I make mods for this?

Users can very easily make new content and sprite replacements for 1-900-CULT with the built-in modding system and level editor. This includes new furniture, tiles, and cutscene sprites. However, these tools are limited and there is no way to create truly unique mechanics.

How well does it run?

1-900-CULT has some major graphical and mechanical deviations from previous Hotline Miami titles, and may not perform well on every computer that could previously run Hotline Miami 1.

Our current performance target is 60 fps on the Steam Deck LCD.

What languages will it be available in?

1-900-CULT is planned to have English, German, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian translations for dialogue and game instructions at launch. Other languages may be added post launch.

When is it coming out?

To be decided. As disappointing as it may be, we aren’t in a position to guess at release windows. Rest assured, though, that we are working hard on this project. It will come out when it is ready, no sooner, and no later.

To keep up with the development of this project and others, even the minutia that won't be posted on our Steam page, you can follow our Twitter, or our Youtube.

Do you plan to integrate support for Steam Achievements? This would be a very nice touch.

will the combo be paused when you go to next floor or enter an elevator?

Combo is not frozen during normal floor transitions, but elevator transitions reduce the speed at which the combo timer depletes.

Can elevator sequecnes be skipped though? It can also benefit speedrunners.

Great care has been taken to fix memory leaks such as this one.

I hope this will not carry over the DPI bug where HLM doesn't scale because of recommended settings.

1-900-CULT’s engine has been almost 100% overhauled, so I wouldn’t expect to see glitches from Hotline 1 or 2 returning — expect to see new and fascinating bugs!

Hi danny, you've probably been asked this question 1000 times already, but 1-900-cult will be released this year? Or we'll have to wait another five years :D
Sorry for the English.

Sorry for the English.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say not this year, but also definitely not 5+ years from now either.

As it says in the FAQ, I’m not going to hazard a guess when it will come out or how much longer it will take to develop. That said, we as a team are really starting to hammer out our workflow and hopefully things will begin to really speed up from now on.

We would really like to get something playable out in the near future (demo, editor beta— something like that) but we’re definitely not ready to seriously discuss that right now.
