If you max prosperity why does the king abdicate?
I was watching a Youtube video that gave it glowing reviews except for a perplexing rule that I assume is a left over from the board game. Why does maxing prosperity cause the king to abdicate. That feels kind of arbitrary/gamey.

Max prosperity doesn't cause the king to abdicate, the stability meter reaching the top end will cause the king to abdicate. However, the game does a poor job at explaining what causes the political balance/stability to shift.

Since this is based on the board game I think I remember the thematic reason for the king abdicating was because the houses garnered to much power so the king decides to leave out of sheer intimidation or something like that, its been a while since ive read the board game rulebook.

If stability hits the top the general boon in times destabilizes the king's authority as wealth, power and faith flood into the houses.

If it hits the bottom he 'abdicates' as the peasants revolt, killing him as a scape goat for the decisions of the houses.

Stability hitting top or bottom can be many things, in the board game, it is usually because of a specific dilemma. So doing the narrative approach is best. Stagnation / Rebellion is so generic. For us, the King got dethroned twice for spending too much wealth on statues and causing a scandal.

Stability on top: we don't need you anymore!

Stability on bottom: It's all your fault!

Yeah. The boardgame ruleset doesnt translate well into a video game.
