They very clearly chose to go with thematic, more than ease of use. Although you can do the ritual in stages.
And ya, the snake dies if you're masochistic enough to use the floaty reaper ghost thing, but the snake is also irrelevant to the value of the Ascension. The stat boost is the only thing that matters.

The trick is to simply make the buff worth the headache. A character who has to go out of there way to activate their effect should receive more from it then someone who doesn't.
Get a few then move away, kiting the enemy with you. Dash in get a few more etc.
I don't see anything wrong with it.
If you compare it to other characters, lets say the Paladin, where you have to chase the Giving Angel all over the place, taking fire as you try to gain the max favour (or ignore it and pick up the favour fragments). The Ritual comes off better IMO.
