PROS:
-TEAMWORK!
-Would make meeting new players and friends easier
-Helpful during matchmaking games to coordinate loadouts etc
-Add personality to the experience, and fun. VOIP is fun when used right.
CONS:
-Trolls. Spammers. There would need to be an easy mute button and report abuse feature.
-teams that don't use VOIP would be at a significant disadvantage to those that do. (not sure if this is really a con)
Probably the main reason that i used GoI:O as an example was because you can make a team of random individuals into a pretty good team using the voice chat to coordinate the team and set up the classes that your team uses along with the weapons on the ship.
All of this allows you to win more when you have a decent captain and crew, by communicating instead of second guessing "is that other engineer gonna fix the ballon or am i gonna have to..." in dead silence.
I highly suggest playing with friends as a team in AirMech, you'll have a great time compared to random players. (that pretty much goes for any team game, ever)
On guns of icarus; I've captained ships where no-one but me had a mic, and we still were a lot more effective than if no-one had a mic at all because they knew what i was planning to do(i told them) and i was able to coordinate them in such a way that i could come up with cohesive battle strats on the fly.
I'm sorry if im dragging this topic on for a while. It's just that this is just one of those features which could make this game much more enjoyable than it already is.
This kind of thing doesn't need to be put in by the end of beta, or for a long time after that, It doesn't need to be put in at all. It would just be one of those things that you could do.
You'll just have settle for Steam's VOIP or another third party program. Try joining/starting a faction that uses organized voice communication. You can always search matchmaking from within a party to ensure your team will be matched together.
Plus, to solve additional cost issue, you can sell consumable stacks of VoIP for diamonds. Give it for free or cheap to VIP users..

Also, you sounds like you're developing an outsourced software & you're not agree with more demands on same price. Remember, you're in-charge of software & its your job to satisfy/ impress us by managing the cost issues somehow.
Try gathering up support for a public Mumble server dedicated to Airmech. You can advertise it here and on the Carbon forums so that more people will join. If you put enough effort into it, I'm sure you can accomplish VoIP for a decent portion of serious Airmech players. It's worth a try!
