Voice chat.
I started playing guns of icarus online recently and use voice chat in most matches to great effect...

And now im wondering if Airmech will ever get voice chat similar to Guns of Icarus Online has,
because i feel that thats is maybe one of the few things stopping me from playing more;

The fact that text chat ingame is time consuming and can cost a match.

post in the comments about what you think voice chat would add to the game(pros/cons ect).

If you're playing with friends from Steam, you can use Steam's built-in voice chat. I would like to see an option to scroll the in-game text chat so that I can see a message I missed.

+1 !!! In game VOIP would significantly enhance this game. I always play with teamspeak with my friends to coordinate teamwork, without VOIP, typing just doen't keep up with the pace of strategy in this game.

PROS:
-TEAMWORK!
-Would make meeting new players and friends easier
-Helpful during matchmaking games to coordinate loadouts etc
-Add personality to the experience, and fun. VOIP is fun when used right.

CONS:
-Trolls. Spammers. There would need to be an easy mute button and report abuse feature.
-teams that don't use VOIP would be at a significant disadvantage to those that do. (not sure if this is really a con)

As was suggested, if you are playing on Steam then use Steam's voice chat--it's a major bonus of the platform. At this point we are not ready to manage/police people abusing voice chat, but anyone interested in it has a bunch of options--Steam's built-in voice chat, Mumble, Ventrillo, etc.

Also, if we did implement any native voice chat, it would need to be a VIP feature due to the cost. And in that case, using Steam voice chat would be better, since everyone has access to it.

I think the trouble with steams voice chat is that you can't really use it to communicate with random people that you would be matched with.

Probably the main reason that i used GoI:O as an example was because you can make a team of random individuals into a pretty good team using the voice chat to coordinate the team and set up the classes that your team uses along with the weapons on the ship.
All of this allows you to win more when you have a decent captain and crew, by communicating instead of second guessing "is that other engineer gonna fix the ballon or am i gonna have to..." in dead silence.

I agree that Steam's voice chat can't be used with AirMech because AirMech allows us to play with random guys..

But built-in voice chat for VIPs won't let you talk to everyone either.

I highly suggest playing with friends as a team in AirMech, you'll have a great time compared to random players. (that pretty much goes for any team game, ever)

If you allowed the non-vip players to listen to what people were saying to them then you could get some teamwork down that way.

On guns of icarus; I've captained ships where no-one but me had a mic, and we still were a lot more effective than if no-one had a mic at all because they knew what i was planning to do(i told them) and i was able to coordinate them in such a way that i could come up with cohesive battle strats on the fly.

I'm sorry if im dragging this topic on for a while. It's just that this is just one of those features which could make this game much more enjoyable than it already is.

This kind of thing doesn't need to be put in by the end of beta, or for a long time after that, It doesn't need to be put in at all. It would just be one of those things that you could do.

Adding in voice communication would be additional stress on the servers. A lot of people would suffer from added lag. It would increase the costs incurred by Carbon Games because they would be using more of the server's resources. There is also the issue of people abusing voice chat to say ugly and vile things. As James stated before, monitoring and responding to this abuse is more trouble than it's worth.

You'll just have settle for Steam's VOIP or another third party program. Try joining/starting a faction that uses organized voice communication. You can always search matchmaking from within a party to ensure your team will be matched together.

@CarbonJames I don't think you need to stress your servers with VoIP. You can use API of third-party services with pay-per-use which can be cheaper than own solution.

Plus, to solve additional cost issue, you can sell consumable stacks of VoIP for diamonds. Give it for free or cheap to VIP users..

Also, you sounds like you're developing an outsourced software & you're not agree with more demands on same price. Remember, you're in-charge of software & its your job to satisfy/ impress us by managing the cost issues somehow.

Remember that Carbon Games is a self-funded team of 7 (maybe more, but mostly 7). There is no publisher investing large sums of money into the game. Keep in mind that it's not only costly to run, but would also be time consuming to implement. That time could be better prioritized on fixing bugs, adding playable content, and overall making Airmech the great game that they've envisioned.

Try gathering up support for a public Mumble server dedicated to Airmech. You can advertise it here and on the Carbon forums so that more people will join. If you put enough effort into it, I'm sure you can accomplish VoIP for a decent portion of serious Airmech players. It's worth a try!

A guy named ComptonEMT runs a mumble server for Airmech and he lets "Mechies" use it if they want voice chat.

If it's alright with ComptonEMT, would you mind posting the server details so that people can try it out?
