Often times you are better off making a custom game and asking/inviting people to play. Personally I sit in 1v1 or 2v2 PvP unranked for ~20 minutes tops. If I don't get a game or at least the ready up button, I just play a different game and try again later lol.
The first is there is just a lack of players. With custom games this didnt matter but they have to support Arena now and decided it was too hard to support. So basically everyone is now screwed. So many of the games I play now are on a a server in europe or asia against laggy butt clowns.
Second is that you most likey do not have enough servers selected. When you first log in first thing you do is go to the watch section, click on location and click the button to refresh locations and wait for it to run. If you dont have Europe or US servers ticked you will take forever to find anyone.
The fact is 2014 has been the absolute worst year for airmech since I have been playing. I mean that in terms of pure game additions. No new airmechs, zero additional units of note, maybe 1 guardian I guess, no new maps which really flipping sucks, and zero mechanical improvements and overall a flat out terrible effort to balance the game. Basically you can sum up 9 months of dev time into mechical regressions to make it more simple, new abilities and a bunch of parts.
The other 99 percent of dev time was spent on Arena, ui chat and chat stuff, coop stuff, nanoforge, factions and most of all art. None of which makes the actual game any better. Oh and they switched over to a forced mm system and removed custom games.
My guess is the developers are fine with people paying something and playing coop then going away. That way they dont have to pay for their overhead.
Airmech seems dead because the game is way stale and matchmaking is only really good for new player coop.
We spend out time on what players pay for. We're actually considering un-F2Ping the game, so that people are spending money to play, and it can justify spending time on it.
Thankfully the Xbox version is doing really well, and paying for development of the PC game. We're super thankful for the players who do support us, but it's only 5% or so that do choose to pay even the minimum $5. Personally I thought PC players would have liked the game more than Xbox players, but so far it's been the opposite. The Xbox version has less features, less content, but is massively more popular. Maybe because it's not labeled beta?
It's also worth noting that I had this game for about a week before giving up on it. I only played a few coop games and zero pvp games. The "biggest complainers are high level" comment doesn't apply here.
Also worth noting that I sold my Xbox to upgrade my PC rig because I got tired of having to pay for multiplayer. Live will be the death of Xbox. But thats a whole diferent story.
What I did play of AirMech was a lot of fun. It made you think and was a neat twist on classic genres. If getting a paid version of the game means I'll get to play pvp and balanced coop, then I'll pay, so long as it isn't overpriced.
And for that final note, why is this still in early access? I never encountered any glitches and gameplay is balanced. There is a ton of ingame content, more than any beta game I've played. If you took it out of beta and had an offical release, it would bring in a lot more players, and in turn more revenue.
Well, stuff like this is why we're still in beta. :) The current problems are related to us trying to tweak the matching to exclude lagging players. It's actually a pretty complex system that takes current pings, and historical pings into account--and there's bugs and exceptions related to that. In some cases players are excluded from locations they should be able to play, and in other cases they're allowed to play on servers they shouldn't be.
There's a lot of good stuff that was well tested on Xbox now, but locations is not one of them. For Xbox, there's only 2 locations--Montreal or Paris. Most players by far can only play on one of them, so everyone in queue will be in the same location. For PC, there's many more locations, and the matrix of those selections is a tangly web to sort out. But, we are in it right now, and will be testing some changes today for it.
That said if I was the developer, I would have a game mode aping from the greatest game "Comet Crash" where the Airmechs didn't fire at each other & had asteroids floating, & maybe evn the harvesters from their Bionic Swarm DLC. My two cents.
