The game is a bit less P2W than CN due to resonance being weaker there (resonance of an element make others weapon of that element stronger, the game entice you to play mono element (and Lin but that's too much details). But right now F2P players will have an hard time pulling a resonance character, especially since most free Red nucleus were given through events you can no longer participate in). And last but not least, armor enhance items and gold can become tedious to get if you don't pay for Month battle pass (~10€).
That being said, most "hard" content is done through matchmaking, so if you're behind in stuff quality that's not so bad. And it's prolly possible to do two 6* standard banner character through all the current game content, some of which rivalize quite well with event banners (Samir, King, Cocoritter).
PVP is standardized but I'll not call it F2P either, since you need at least one copy of a character to play it. Meaning that people having pull at least one event banner character will have an advantage.
So if you do want to play the game, the content and the freebies will allow you to have a full 6* stars team eventually, but you'll do struggle in raw efficiency to P2W players. Oh, and if you do start the game, NEVER EVER do a 6* until all your prefered team is 5*, because extra copies are turned into 10 black gold, which is a huge loss. Trust me as someone who got 6 extra copy of Samir.
Exactly. It's pretty much a single-player RPG story game where you're pretty much competing with is yourself. Since everything in Genshin can be soloed including the weekly bosses with just 4* characters and decent artifacts, there's literally no point in topping-up in the game unless you're just horny for a character.
With these 4* easy to get characters in Genshin, Xingque, Benette, Xiangling from Standard Banner then add any DPS = Congratulations you can finish the entire game's current story with this team and 90% of any content in that game.
In ToF the vast majority of characters need A3 (four copies) to get the most out of their kit. The only ones I can think of right now in global that are fine at A0 are Freya and Ruby.
Nemesis needs A1 at least for her full kit. Huma needs A1 as well for smoother play. Saki Fuwa will want A1 as well. Samir wants A3 for the best damage output. Lin needs A1 to be super useful and A3 to hit the actual off-field support everyone raves about not to mention a 4-piece matrix set for being super uber although that's total whale territory unless you've saved every possible pull since the start of the game+battle pass and dc pacs. Tsubasa is best at A3. Crow is pretty meh unless A6. King is garbage in general and I wouldn't waste upgrades on him (personal opinion).
ToF is also pretty front loaded in generosity. You get a ton of free pulls and dark crystals the first month or so when starting a new account not to mention the SSR selector box. However once you get to Vera all the free pulls and dark crystals are locked behind gatcha boxes (currency is earned by playing the game and opening Vera chests). That means you need to work your buns off to gather 10,000 of these currencies just to clear out ONE box. It takes I think 20k Old Vera coins to max out the two gatchas and like 40k Mira (or whatever it's called) to max out the FOUR other gatchas. When the next major update comes out there will be another four gatchas added behind the current ones bringing the total to like 80k Mira to get everything. That is an insane amount of chest keys/hours spent farming and considering they only respawn every 5 hours, good luck.
Genshin has events every two weeks pretty much to earn primogems while only a couple pulls you at least don't need to farm for hours and hours in order to get them.
They both have "battle passes" and 30 day log-in gem packs although I would say ToF's is much better for the 30$ version since you always get like a mount or outfit and profile customization options plus you get way more stuff over-all for completing the pass. Genshin you only get a profile background and a useless furniture item that just sits in your tea pot doing nothing.
Then there is the "events" they do in ToF which have all outside of two or three have been "spend 100$ for this cute outfit and if you don't get it before it's gone it's probably gone forever teehee" fomo system. In Genshin you get free outfits and only have to pay 20-30 bucks for the "special" ones. ToF has a much worse outfit system outside the ones you can earn for free.
Take me for example Halloween is my favourite holiday and I want all the current gatcha event items because of it. You need literally 100 pulls to get everything, I've only got like 24 pulls left to finish off getting the rest of the stuff and guess what's all still in there? You guessed it all the good stuff. The costumes, the profile boarder, the chatbox and summons literally everything you actually want will be at the bottom of the list unless insanely lucky. I see posts all the time on the Reddit page of people getting outfits and stuff from the free x5 pulls they give out but I never seem to get lucky with any of them even having spent money. You either get blessed by the RNG gods or have to fully pay out in order to get what you want there is like no in between.
The big difference shows it's self when you're going to whale out on a specific character. On average in ToF it takes a lot less money to max out a character, usually between 400-700 dollars because of the red gold system allowing you to buy copies. In Genshin you can spend actual thousands to not only get maxed constellations but then you have to suffer through the weapon banner which needs something like 260 or whatever pulls just to guarantee one copy of their signature weapon. The one good thing in ToF is at least the character and the weapon come together, but when you start factoring in Matrices it's RNG on top of RNG to get them cause you not only need to pull four of them for the full 4/4 set but you have to hope you don't get a dupe for one you've already pulled unless hoping to fully upgrade the set. I have not seen math comparing Genshin's weapon banner vs ToF's Matrix banner, but I'd enjoy seeing the numbers in total cost to max one Genshin weapon vs a full ToF limited banner Matrix set.
If you bothered you read all that, nice! If you didn't Tl;Dr: I'd say in the long run ToF is much more P2W considering it has PvP and leaderboards plus most characters need dupes in order to unlock their full kit while in Genshin copies just bring more damage or small QoL buffs and they don't require their signature weapons to clear content.
You can see some low level players can get maxed out weapons early on at first it seems okay but once you unlock other maps it will be difficult for F2P users specially on the increasing CS power level and suppressor level not to mention that once you keep leveling everything scales and more difficult. Play this game since it came out and most of the time I've used maxed 4* and take age's to take down but once you spend a lot of money and maxed out 5* progress is faster.
Comparing this to Genshin Impact is no where close to be honest since ToF has more on PvP and ranking systems which majority of course will spend and spend more to get into those leader boards. I stopped playing the game for a while and tried it again made a new character to see how the progression is and sadly it is not a fun, enjoyable experience and the only way you can get those good stuff gold nucleus are hard grind, explore the whole map which pretty much you will do through out the game.
Weapon upgrade system is not healthy if you've asked me getting the 5* weapon randomly and upgrading it is a pain.
I can't believe there are people with a brain that think ToF being more generous = less p2w. You have to think about the content, not just the banners themselves.
