Resolution problems and unplayability due to glitch
First of all, I've always been excited to play this game, ever since I first heard of it. My friend bought it for me on Steam for Christmas, and just today I got around to trying it. However, I could not get very far due to a glitch that I discovered only fifteen minutes into the game. First let me address another issue, though.

=Resolution=
Immediately when I loaded the game I was met with disappointment. Not with the game itself, but rather the fact that you cannot set the resolution. My monitor resolution is 1366x768, and the resolution of the game is definitely not that. The entire screen is horizontally stretched, by far lessening the atmosphere of the game. In addition, you cannot play in windowed mode, meaning I HAVE to play the game in this skewed resolution. I can understand wanting the player to play in full screen, further enhancing their experience, but in this particular case the game is far less appealing in full screen.

=Directional Glitch=
It was after the initial dialogue in the mansion—when I was just walking around trying to go into all of the rooms that Dr. Rosalene wouldn't let me enter, when for some reason my character started walking right, and wouldn't stop. It was like the keyboard was jammed or something. This is the kind of situation that could be fixed on the Wii by unplugging and re-plugging a GameCube controller, but unplugging and re-plugging my keyboard did absolutely nothing. What's more, restarting the game did nothing, and neither did completely uninstalling and re-installing the game: it still glitches on even the main menu, acting as if I'm holding down the right directional button.

I know it's not the keyboard, because I tried several tests (including loading up VVVVVV, which uses the directional buttons), and the keys worked perfectly fine. I even left the menu running when I unplugged the keyboard, and the option selection just kept going right. I really don't know what the problem is.

Both of these problems are quite frustrating; one lessening my enjoyment of the game, and one making the game actually impossible to play. Could I get some help here?

1. Resolution
Try pressing Alt+Enter while playing the game and see if that doesn't change it to windowed mode.

2. Directional glitch
This is most probably due to what I would call a 'phantom' gamepad producing garbage inputs.
You can figure out if that is indeed the case by following the steps in this post: http://freebirdgames.com/forum/index.php?topic=3775.msg159352#msg159352

Let me know if this solved any of your problems.

Hey, thanks for the quick response. Switching to windowed mode works—thanks! Full screen with proper resolution would be the best option, but I understand that can be difficult to implement.

As for the directional glitch, adding the Save3.rxdata file doesn't appear to change anything. I'm considering loading the game, exiting out, and then reloading the game again instantly before it syncs, and seeing if that can overright the Steam cloud data, completely resetting the game as if it hasn't been played. IF that works, then hopefully the glitch won't appear again.

I actually had a glitch where it wouldn't update the screen in fullscreen mode; I tried hitting alt + enter and now it's working in windowed at least. I dislike windowed over fullscreen, but I can deal with it I think. Thanks Zeriab!

I wonder if the directional glitch could be fixed if I just got a gamepad.

I was playing this game for about 2 hours before the movement glitch showed up. I'd really rather not have to start a whole new file just to fix this.

I had just gotten past John and River's wedding (I can't believe I just realized another Doctor Who reference). Any suggestions one what to do? I managed to get through the next area without too much trouble but attempting to solve the puzzle at the end was nigh on impossible. I had hoped getting to the next stage would fix the issue but now I can't move at all.

^ You're telling me. I have my file saved where Dr. Watts is stuck against the wall, and it's really impossible to move. I wonder if just getting a gamepad might solve the problem.

You can type "joy.cpl" and see if you have any there.
Alternatively you can open the Device Manager and look at the (Human Interface Devices) HIDs.
It may be one of those acting up.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT DISABLING THEM - They may include your keyboard and mouse.

The few examples of this issue in XP games (Engine issue) which were succesfully identified all brewed down to the same cause:
A game controller was attached to the computer and later removed. Even just plugging the controller in a different port may cause the issue.
Mind you, most of time messing around with the HIDs solved the issue leaving the actual cause unknown.

As for the save: Loading it will unfortunately only fix the issue for the current 'session'
You would have to load that specific save every time you start the game.

I have had the same problem and just recently fixed it. Apparently its a driver issue so I hooked up and new mouse and started uninstalling drivers for all the crap that I have connected to my PC. Not being super familiar with the inner workings of a pc, this is how i got the drivers uninstalled (windows 7 64bit) Control Panel-Veiw Devices and Printers (right under Hardware and Sound). Plug in the device you want to remove drivers for so it pops up on the screen. Right click on it and select Properties. Select Hardware tab at the top and click properties. There is a tab on this next screen for drivers but everything is grayed out (for me at least) so click Change Settings on the first tab (General). This will open another window with another driver tab. Click on this one. From there you can uninstall the driver. I uninstalled numerous things before testing To the Moon again so all I can say for sure is that it wasnt my original wireless keyboard and mouse. Other things that I uninstalled were sony USB wireless headset dongle and a wired 360 controller. The wife and i are going to play through this game and then Ill reinstall everything and figure out exactly which one did it.

I re installed the drivers for the other 2 devices and To the Moon is still controlling fine. As this was the first game ive gotten my wife to play, I was super disappointed the controls didnt work. Glad I got it fixed and really hope this helps anybody with the same issues.
