I'm trying to play it on my steam deck. I actually bought this game to play it on the Steam deck. And it seems like the controller scheme is all wonky. I haven't really quite figured out how to map the controller well so my hope is that the developer will update this and get a deck verified. Cuz I think it's going to be awesome on the deck. So in short yes you can play it on the deck but you need to remap and I don't know how to do that.

Great, good to know. Still a good game after all those years :)

I tried starting this last night. The default controls are weird (X to confirm (PlayStation's square)), but are easily remapped.

The problem is that the game runs very fast so as soon as you get through the initial dialog, the characters run very very fast and it's a bit hard to control (and kind of takes you out of the moment). I'm not sure what options Steam Deck has for slowing the game down, I haven't really found anything (Google results are mostly complaining of slow down).

Tried it again recently after I realized you can change the version of proton and use community controller layouts.

Now the issue is when you jack in for the first time as Neil, the game opens some sort of "ActiveMovie Window" and SteamDeck shows that broadcast graphic like it can't render what the game is doing.

Steam has marked the game as playable now, but I still can't get more than 15 minutes into the game without the ActiveMovie Window problem happening.

During certain parts of the game, this shows up:

The game is still running in the background (making sounds, reacting to inputs), but once this thing shows up, it doesn't go away.

Here's the Steam Deck overlay showing it has two windows open. I tried switching back to the game, but nothing seems to work:

Playing it currently on Steamdeck. Works fine, occasionally have to use the mouse pointer, but mainly works off two buttons perfectly.
Another thread says that enforcing Proton leads to a better experience:

I am playing it now. I mapped the left trackpad to mouse, the right trigger to left click, and the left trigger to right click. You can move with the dpad, interact with X, and open the menu with B.

There is a point at which you will need to use the wasd keys, so you will need to map these too. I mapped these to my right trackpad.
