I don't think that would work for this game. Multiplayer is something the game has to be designed around very early in the development process. Like you gotta now before you start any work on the game if it's gonna be multiplayer or not. It's not something you can just add really.

Nobody would undermine the fact that it would take a lot of work, but I contest that it wouldn't work at all. For example, Tetris Effect demonstrates you can take an arcade, single player game formula and adapt it in a myriad of ways to work well co-operatively and in pvp modes. You could definitely do the same here by having split lanes that influence each other, or multiple players on a single lane.

While I'm not optimistic that will happen, it would be great if it did.

I would even be willing to accept making it so that instead of getting the abilities of both characters in duo mode, each player controls one of them and we each only get 3 balls.

Hypothetically, because you can already have two characters walking together, it shouldn't be so hard to make the second one "couch co-op controled"

and then we could use "Steam Play Together" to take it online!

A mode dedicated to co-op for each level would be rather decent. it'd be more a balancing issue than much else.
