Is Avernum 6 engine closer to that of the 1-3 remakes?

The remakes of Avernum 1-3 are by far my favorite Spiderweb Software games, I finished them all and tried to play Avernum 4, but it's just too much of a step backwards in many ways. (and the horrible mouse lag in various places really makes things a chore)

Avernum 6 looks pretty close to the remakes, technically speaking. Is it? And will I be kicking myself one day (if the second trilogy gets remade) if I made a jump to it without playing 4 and 5?
