Do I need to play Starless first?

I never played an Empress game before but I'm really interested. And now that it is on Steam, I feel tempted.
But do I need to play Starless first? Or I can go with this one first without problem?

It's not required since this is a spin off but I think you'd get more out of it (certain references may be lost on you without it). Starless is a one of a kind game so I highly recommend playing it. Be sure to get the content restoration patch for it if you want to see everything.
