smelter - only copper?
Can I only melt copper with the smelter? I have now found iron and gold. I have the ores in my inventory but the smelter only shows copper ingto.

Need to buy the recipe for iron ingots off of the quest/trader guy.
Edit: Also only have one ore type in your inventory when smelting.
the normal smelter can only smelt copper, tin and silver.
You need the greater smelter for iron and gold which you buy from the quest npc.
And btw steel and bronze have to be done at the forge, for combining two metals, it is not done at the smelter
How do I switch the smelter to do Tin or Silver? Only gives me the option to do Copper.
Only have one ore type on you when you go to smelt.

Ya like Downwithpeace says only have the particular ore in your inventory at a time, there are some materials that you dont get from the smelter or forge for making things like steel, but ill let you figure that out.
The Smelter (and greater smelter) seem currently to have a priority for metal types. For the basic smelter, it's something like copper > tin > silver, the greater smelter might be gold > iron > ambrosia. Either way, to smelt a particular one, just make sure it's the only one in your inventory.
you can have multiple ores in your inventory too, but you need to use up the listed ore first before it cycles to the next one.

Way too complicated!
It simply depends on which ore is in the smelter! It seems, that you cant Mix the ore in the smelter. Only one Kind works. So when you want to smelt a different ore, you have to wait till there ist no ore left in the smelter. Only then a different ore can be added, regardless of what you have in the inventory.
The Basic requirement is for sure, that in the "normal smelter" only Cooper, tin and silver works.
This can help you understand the smelter/greater smelter. And yes, it needs a toggle in the future (and an add all)

As of August 2025, this incredibly anti-QoL, janky behaviour is still there!

Shiroe's comment helped me, and please let me explicitly add:

Not only has the "current duty batch" to be empty, the "ready depot" on the right side ALSO has to be empty. JEEZUS

You need to select which ores you want to Smelter by walking up to the Smelter and pressing F. This brings up a wheel where you can choose between Copper, Tin, and Silver.
