Playing as a female?
This is a question for the devs:

So, I just got this game and I rather enjoyed the small amount of time I've spent with it... but I'm specifically looking for a game like this to play with my wife, and she has a sort of "line in the sand" where she will only play games that let her play as a female.

Are there any plans to make character gender customization a thing? If so, when?

Thanks, and great game so far :-)

"We needed to enter early access to be able to support our small team as we keep working on the project." Thus already abusing the Early Access program. Under the Early Access guidelines your game should already be fully funded with the expectation that you will get to a full release.

I understand that a small development studio needs money! But as a developer I wouldn't have saved on character selection/design, but somewhere else. Because I'm one of those people who doesn't want to start as a male character and then have to start over again, have to play through everything all over again... I've done that too many times, I don't like that anymore. But yes, it was your decision, dear team and as I said, I won't buy until female. Char selection is active.
I bought it on release. I had no idea that there was no female option. :steamfacepalm:

it's sad that in 2024 a game doesn't have a female character. It is important for players to identify with the character and have the ability to customize it. It seems stupid to me to have to point this out. Furthermore, men very often prefer to use a female character while the opposite does not happen. I am a woman and I have shown your game in my youtube channel. I'm waiting for the female character to bring more videos to my channel. Maybe it's true, if you decide to create the female character later you could lose an early profit.

I don't believe that it's "sad" that it doesn't have body type A characters and only has body type B characters right now. They're pixels on a screen so it really doesn't matter, but the game is in early access and certain features like having both body types available for players to choose from and character customisation are options that simply haven't been implemented yet. They won't lose any early profit for not adding both types now. They could have easily just added body type A characters instead of body type B characters for now and that wouldn't matter either.

It's not as important as you think for players to identify with characters or customize them. Tens of thousands of games don't offer any character choices at all, and many more offer very limited choices. Plenty of games have little to no customization options and they are still immensely popular. For example Rust doesn't give you a choice at all, you get whatever the game decides that you get, and there are currently over 99,000 people playing. That game sold what, 15 or 16 million copies? Yeah, people complain about the lack of options but it didn't really affect sales in any significant way and with nearly 100k concurrent players I would say that proves that gameplay trumps having avatar options.

The opposite certainly does happen, MissUna. You can't state it "does not happen" as a fact because that's absolutely not true. I guarantee there are at least a few women out there that prefer, or want, to use a male character. Remember - there are tens of millions of gamers out there with rather diverse preferences.

When I play TombRaider I don't expect to be able to chose a male hero.

What is sad is that games can never be historically accurate because developers feel pressured to incorporate female characters in eras and settings where none were present to appease half the gaming client base.

Never mind the obvious issue that rigid definitions for what is male and female, leaving everyone who isn't either or feels different in an un-mentioned category, is confusing people almost to the point of societal collapse.

Maybe there aren't enough games about what women were really doing back then but I feel they would have counted themselves lucky to face challenges with risks other than being impalled or disemboweled on the battlefield. Their real story may not have been as exciting but by pretending females were warriors, you are robbing them of their true accomplishments and minimizing their true impact on the development of society as we know it.

Today, anyone can be what they wish, do what they want which is great but... no behaviour or appearance can ever be associated with any gender ever. We are all human, so a game without the possibility to chose a gender is actually transcending the very idea of choice. I support it fully.

It'll need expanded cooking before that.

I would just like to see SOME customization of my character. Some different faces, some beardless etc. would be nice. Otherwise, graphically I like what I'm seeing so far.

Female Centurions seems an odd request. Is this game not historically accurate? At least to basics.

The roadmap also says that you don't care about female characters at all, you want to implement it later. You can save yourself LATER, because later (in 1/2 a year or so) only a small number of people will play the game anyway; the majority of people will move on to the next “great game”. And when your game finally allows female characters, you can walk around the country alone. So: completely uninteresting. You don't want female characters, okay. I just didn't think it would still be possible today to exclude a large group from the start, especially IF you need money for further development. That's it for me, game comes from the wishlist, all the best.

If the lack of a femaie model in an EA game makes you lose your mind, maybe this whole game thing isn't for you.

Says what I am assuming is a white guy who always has representation in his games. 🙄

You do realize that there are historical reports of female gladiators and female’s included in Roman battles? Less of them by far yes but they were there.
lol, male gamer that prefers playing female by far. Why? I'd much rather stare at the female form for 40+ hours than the male. If there weren't dozens of Steam games with female protags I'd be less picky.

No sense talking realism in a game with flight and magic.

What a dumb line in the sand. You could determine value by game play, story, attention to detail. But no, it's either boobs or no go?

I'm a female and I judge games by quality. It's 'nice' to be able to make a female character, but it's one of the least important things, especially in this type of game. People are so incredibly surface these days. Identity over substance. It's not good for anyone.

indeed. originally (being gay male ) i only prefered play male toons while all my straight friends (guys) prefered female toons/characters like in wow ect . i tried to give in and see past playing female toon like in subnactica 1 and 2 and in end i didnt mind as much as i thought i would given i came to understand some stories are from a perspective that isnt always allotted to male or female only . in end we can still engress and immerse ourselves as someone we dont identify as , would i prefer being able be either ofc , does it make or break a early access game especially when they originally said no females but now said prolly but later on ofc doesnt break the game given theyve changed thier minds and down road when enough resources can be pulled they will. silly to expect them to just stop content and such for a model . i agree with ya

As ever you want. BUT:
a new game in 2025 without the possibility to choose between male and female character can't have a lot of quantity.
You can buy it, you can play it - but for the game is over.
as a greek its a b it insulting to the history of my people. i understand your reasonings but its still a bit of an insult. and yes i know im gonna get crap for saying this
