How to do air tricks

Just wondering if there's an actual method to doing air tricks. I believe you're supposed to hold RT while grinding, then you'll do an air trick. Problem is, I don't always do air tricks when holding RT, and sometimes I do air tricks without holding RT.

Reason I ask, it seems like air tricks actually give you more air. Sometimes I want more air, sometimes I don't. I'd like to be able to control this aspect of the game (obviously, haha).

How do you make sure you either do or do not do an air trick?

You automatically do air tricks if you go fast enough.
No need to hold RT / Dash.

Tricks start happening usually around the third jump off poles and grinds, and on certain terrain if you have good speed, it really depends on the ground you're on and the angle you jump from it.
