JSR Controller issue

After struggling with controllers for hours, and using X360ce, the closest I've gotten to the game working is using a Gamecube Controller, but that only seems to work on jsrsetup, and doesn't work at all on the game itself. What can I do to get past this hurdle? I want to try this game again but I cant do it without a controller.

I have the same problem but I am using PS4 controller. I have tried everything....

I use the Xbox One for Windows controller and the game recognizes it with no issues.
