If you made JSR3?
I know most of you here are asking for JSRF for Steam before anything else, but if Sega did decide to make a third installment to the series, what would you like in it?

Heres what I'd like for a JSR3:
Controls
  1. More steady controls (Jumps)
JSR tutorial. You're grinding and need to disembark for a wall-ride. You judge your speed and jump-distance and you know you can pull it off. But while you have the analogue stick steady you end up flinging way off-course and ruin the grind.
It'll help if the direction controls wern't so janky and sensetive at the same time that make simple jumps swerve and be difficult to manuver. It's like gravity is doing it's thing and then all of a sudden moon physics.
Just make up your mind and stick to one set of physics where jumping isn't such a chore.
  2. More steady controls (Movement)
Each character have different technique and in JSRF it's elaborated on with acceleration and cornering. This is understandable given JSR is a freestyle-skating game so you're suppose to "steer" than basic action-platforming. But if you're not at all moving and still having trouble jumping on rails or over obsticals then that is just frustrating. Tony Hawk games arn't as frustrating when it comes to basic jumping and the gameplay is more elaborate, so why should it be a hassle for us?
  3. Am I going fast enough for this jump?
I like how trick-jumps work in JSR. You have to be fast enough in order to pull off an elaborate jump and due to how elaborate the jump is it's possible to overcompensate a jump meaning you have to time it well. However if you're not going fast enough then you'll get a standard jump that may not be enough for what you're doing. It's a clever concept that makes the game unique.
All I ask for is for a more clearer indication whenever I am fast enough for a trick-jump. Especially when grinding.
How about when grinding only white, standard particle sparks are visable for grinding? The blue, firey sparks seen when grinding are the same sparks used for "Speed-up" so given the assosiation with speed, what if the blue sparks are only visable when you're fast enough for a trick-jump?
It would really help over trying to figure out "am I fast enough? Is it too late to jump to increase speed? If I try to jump to increase speed will I overshoot my mark?" Stuff like that.
  4. Reposition camera
It's useful when you can reset the camera back behind you. Especially given how responsive the analogue is to where the camera is facing than where Beat is facing. My only complaint about it is how instantainious it is that it is almost jarring when you're grinding and jumping. If the camera simply swivels around for less than half a second then it look more natual and less distracting. If you don't like it and prefer it instant then perhaps can be toggled in options.

Gameplay
  1. Open-world Tokyo-to
In Jet Set Radio, missions take place in parts of Tokyo-to with roads serving as exits. Each mission has seperate stages.
What if JSR3 takes a page from the Grand Theft Auto series (and most open-world games) and just make all of Tokyo-to available to the player? Playing as other GGs would still be optional by visiting your garage and perhaps there can be a "Fast travel" to replace level select (thoughhonestly, fast travel would break the immersaion and rather just skate to my destination)
Other rudies can give you side-missions, challenges and what not. These rudies either from rival gangs or fellow GGs. Perhaps there can be "reputation" where doing missions or painting territories will alter how other gangs percieve you.
  2. Graffiti wherever I want.
In games like Half-Life and Team Fortress Classic as well as their respected sequals, you can spray a picture on virtually any surface in the maps of the game. In JSR3, how about designated areas for spraying only be visable for specific missions and that players can spray wherever they want if their is clear space. For the four-button controller, only a jump button is used while the other three buttons are left unused. These buttons could be used for selecting which spray you want to use and if the spray has an X over it means their is inaddequate space for spraying (or not enough cans). I think the only limit is if you try to spray over your own spray (or at least a vicinity of your oprevious spray) then your old spray will be erased. This will prevent players from spamming their sprays over areas and for sprays to be more fairly apart.
  3. Graffiti however I want.
As said, there are spare buttons that are unused. These buttons could be used as a "quick-select" for various sprays to paint with. For example XBox pad can have Y for small sprays, X for medium and B for large sprays. Pressing these buttons will cycle from a selection of three sprays of pre-selected sprays giving the player a total of nine sprays to vary from. Heading back to the GGs garage will allow them to change their sprays (or perhaps do so in pause menu.)
  4. MMO-mode
The same Tokyo-to but outside of storymode where players can join one of the four prime gangs: Graffiti Gang, Lover Shockers, Poison Jam or Noise Tanks. As for who you're playing as, see "Custom Rudies".

Customization
  1. Graffiti
Custom graffiti in JSR is decent but it's efficiency is limited. If JSR3 was released on both PC and Steam then a mouse/stylus controlled graffiti studio would be more efficient.
For Steam release, maybe there can be an option to import Miiverse art while PC release allows to import image files from your PC.
A good built-in graffiti studio means importing wouldn't be neccessary, but given the popular use of JSR Custom Graffiti Manager, JSR3 might as well have an import-tool built in to save trouble for modders.
  2. Custom Rudies
Custom rudies that serve as players avatar. They may serve as a playable GG (perhaps second default to Beat himself) in storymode or perhaps exclusive to online mode. Have names no bigger than 5 letters, can select gender, skin, hair and usual selection while additional things like clothes and components of own skates can be purchased.
  3. Money, clothes and skate parts
Due to Tokyo-to's punk culture, outlandish fashion is important to rudies. Doing jobs and missions could earn yen which could go into buying components for your inline skates that could alter your acceleration, cornering, technique and perhaps grant other perks. There can also be clothing stores which allows you to buy new outfits for Beat, Gum, Tab and all the other playable characters. If custom rudies that serve as Avatars is possible then they too can buy and wear clothes to make them more unique individuals.
  4. Steam Workshop
A Steam workshop where mods, graffiti and custom made clothes could be downloaded and played with.

So far, these are all the ideas I have for how I would like JSR3 if it ever happened.
An elaborate idea for it can be that JSR3 could make use of the two seperate continuities established from the first and second game.
list]
  • Story-mode (Single player)
Taking place a year or so after Jet Set Radio where all the stages in the original game are now part of an open-world map with new areas available to explore. Perhaps due to the failure and destruction caused by the 21st Project, various places are renovated to offer new experiances to familiar territories.
  • Turf War (Online multiplayer)
Taking place a year or so after Jet Set Radio Future. Instead of a story or multiple players to choose from, players create a custom rudie and pick one of the four gangs of Tokyo-to. Conquest is done by tagging specified points. Servers are perhaps resetted every 24 hours where team players are rewarded for their progress.

And yeah, I've seen Jet Set Evolution Proof of Concept video and honestly, can see why Sega rejected it. Was kinda too "neon" for my taste. And the gameplay doesn't look all that outstanding. Models are quality though. JSEvo looks as if it's trying to be a bit like Hover but instead looks somewhat TRONish.

You just described the perfect JSR game, I kinda had the same ideas :P I will definitely prefer that from JSRF

My only fault I think from my own ideas would be that it's online mode would draw attention away from the Storymode.

But given GTAV also has an Online Mode that doesn't distract from the main story I guess it won't be much of a problem.

Still two sets of Tokyo-to (one Futuristic, the other modern) maybe too much for a single game to handle. It's likely Sega would pick one or the other. Or make a new continuity for Jet Set Radio which I hope not if they're just going to recycle the same story.
What not to do: Open world meme.

What to do entirely: Arcade style.
I wouldn't mind open world being similar to the one from JSRF, but for the love of god, don't put unskippable cutscenes in it.

I really wish JSRF HD will be a thing on steam someday. I feel like I'm missing out if JSRF already ticks some of my listed ideas.

Trust me, lots of us here would love to see it on Steam, but Sega just refuses to port it for whatever reason.

I do have JSRF for XBox somewhere (why I never got round to playing it I dunno) I do not know if it will play on by XBox 360.

I like it when Sega import their console games to Steam, but I hate it when they don't bother with sequals and prequals.

For example Bayonetta is on Steam. But they really couldn't import Bayonetta 2 to Steam? Is a secondary portable monitor necessary for gameplay that it just cannot function at all on any other console than Nintendos?

Same goes for The House/Typing of the Dead series. We got Overkill on Steam, but thats it, despite Overkill not being the only TotD game. Theres four other main games before that and I doubt Scarlet Dawn will ever have major console release so screw those who don't live near a propper arcade to enjoy the games.

This is why I believe "SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics" should just be rebranded as "SEGA Classics" and cover a whole variety of consoles for those who missed out growing up.
I recently had a new idea.

What if even on Single-player story mode there was a multiplayer mode?

Think about it by JSR perspective. You have your level select, then character select followed by the actual mission. If persay another player pressed start on the controller and select a character maybe more than one player can help with the mission and share a better rank.
Some new ideas I thought of.
  • If Beat is the default of the first game and Yoyo is the default of JSRF, if the third game will be a third retelling of the same story, what if Coin is the default? Instead of meeting his demise, the first campaign could be about how Rapid 99 from America go to Tokyo-to after an anonymous tip named "K" to team up with the GGs to stop the Rokugo.
(Though in all honesty, I would like a continuation of at least one of the two established continuities than a third retelling of the story.)
  • The trick system as well as animation for tricks will be based on Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. This is because I found the trick system in JSR rather autonomous anyway so might as well make it more stylish and exciting than just smooth and plain.
  • The LT shoulder button is no longer graffiti action. Instead when held down it will allow you to control the camera with the right analogue stick. Maybe the rudie will shake a can when you do so and a cursor will appear on the surface of the wall you're facing to indicate a paintable area. Simply tapping LT will quickly repossition the camera behind you.
  • Graffiti Action is now the X button. When pressed it will allow you to spray the nearest vertical surface. When you hold down LT it will allow you to more specifically choose where you want to spray. This will allow you to spray practically anywhere you want. It will also provide a few other practicallities.
    • Pressing X near walls with arrows on them will autoamtically spray in that given area. So if you're grinding by more than one area for graffiti and trying to spray, your camera would even more jarring with spraying and multiple camera-resetting.
    • If you're chased by cops or an opponent, spraying them in the face would be optional, thus the ability to defend yourself.
    • Small sprays are the default spray for X. Arrowed walls will allow you to spray larger sizes automatically which will start the graffiti minigame. Holding down LT will allowyou to use the D-pad to select which graffiti piece to lay down anywhere.
  • Maybe RT quickly followed by X will serve as a ram attack where instead of a boost of speed, you can ram your opponents. It be useful when you want to push past a mob of enemies or in a race against an opponent. (I hate how when you're racing an opponent, they can push you down when touched, but you can't push them back. That would definately be removed in favour for some form of fair-game defence both you and the rival can do.
  • Pressing RT while standing still can have the player quickly turn away from the player. This will b useful for when you want to prepare for a trick while standing still.
  • Campaign mode. An idea for the story mode inspired by Sonic Adventure. The first campaign is GG (Or Rapid 99 if Coin is default rudie, followed by GG) and by beating rival gangs you can unlock other campaigns based on the gangs which introduce new characters exclusive to other gangs and play through other stories that offer different perspective of the main plot of the game. Other playable gangs in mind are Love Shockers, Posion Jam and Noise Tank. Either existing GG members will be spread out to the other campaigns or new characters will be introduced for the other gangs.
  • Perhaps get to see the rudies personal lives off the streets. An idea can be Gum is the daughter of an uptight, snobbish mother who is assosiated, supporter or financer with the Rokkaku, making her relationship with her daughter strained.

With all these ideas I've come up with, I might as well jot them down if I ever plan to make my own Jet Set Radio fan game.

cxbx plays it just fine at 60 FPS and they fixed the graphical issues, and the music. It's playable.

If it's possible to play JSRF on cbxb, is that why Sega hasn't bothered to put it on Steam?
I´m up for an open world JSR, not too fond of multiplayer games and l definitely don´t want people messing around my town! so no MMO characteristics for me, but l wouldn´t mind online races or other activities but make them completely optional.

As far as gameplay l want more control for the tricks instead of a single button action and it would be great to have crazy structures like in the sky dinosaurian square, l would like some areas with different gravity properties too but l don´t want to directly control it since that would make things too easy IMO, maybe have some rails and walls that have different gravity (upside down and whatnot).

For graphics l want them to keep the cell-shaded look, a lot of anime games these days use those weird realistic textures mixed with plain anime textures and no cartoon outline, l don´t like that. l want it to look like Guilty Gear Xrd/Rev. Post effects are ok too and l would love to have a lot physics in the environments.

l also like the idea of customizable characters, l like the classic gang so l don´t want to make my own character but would love to change their outfits and upgrade their gear.

Music must be composed by Hideki of course, not much else to say here since he´s the soul of JSR.

And for story l´ll take anything tbh xD.

I reconsidered how MMO can work and instead of an actual MMOG, I figured just online turf-ar like matches instead of a full fledged MMOG. It can be like PUBG or Fortnite oly instead of the world map shrinking and having to kill one another, it's simply tagging as much areas as possible before a time end.
Ir can be 1v3 matches with GG, Love Shockers, Noise Tanks and Poison Jam being the prime gangs.

I kinda like the basic trick system it has. Maybe it can be elaborated on by how fast you're going, how soon you jump off the edge of a rail or ramp or other details.
My inspration for how tricks can be done is from Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity which too had a fairly automated trick system, but the camera made those tricks look stylish.
I guess what I am saying it should be one or the other. It be like SR:ZG or like Tony Hawk games.

I think being celshaded define the JSR games. It makes them stand out and colourful nd somewhat animeish.

I can imagine the idea of instead of a mission select map, you make your character and talk to NPCs who give you the missions instead and these missions earn yen that you can spend on upgrades for your rollarblades or new clothing.

I solely agree.
But I also like the idea of the radio station Jet Set Radio being broadcasted differently. I like the idea of the radio being like off the Fallout games where the songs can end and Professor K narrates, takes calls or the like, serving like a propper radio station.
I also figured that maybe there can be a catagory in the workshop where musicians can submit songs they want heard on the radio to allow aspiring musicians to have their songs heard, or maybe players can make custom music lists to listen to while playing.

Messaggio originale di ar2games:

I do wonder if there will be a JSR3, if they'll retell the same story but different continuity, or continue from the previous established continuities.
1. all the characters whould return along with some new ones
2. open world or at least what they had in JSRF
3. character custimization
4. pots
5. add some crush40 and zebrahead to the soundtrack
6. characters that also skateboard and ride scooters...
7. inport you own grafiti
