but one thing that could help a bit in the meantime, is to try right-clicking on everything you find, which will show some context menu info at least. (for example rusty metal parts, will have "repair" and then dragging it over an item will highlight it green if it can be used on it)
The other things that're given no UI explanation or context in the game is the entire stock exchange, how to use it, what subscribing to factions does, etc.
Or what any of the "required items" are for any of the non-combat missions, or what the small icons in those required items are (theres an green equal sign, a green up symbol, and a red down symbol)
up arrow means in demand (and barter value rose / is rising / will rise)
red down arrow means the opposite for lower value
and = means its always worth that amount.
(if i had to guess) :)
I'm playing the beta btw.
what i usually do is click on the stock exchange, and then click on a faction, such as church of revelation, and it shows me what items are currently available for me (based on my relations with them and/or progression of the game with power and tech levels etc), along with the % chance of getting it.
but as to the actual trade value equivalent for each item, i think that is just learnt from experience over time, for example i traded these items:
36 acids + 17 metal armour plates = worth 70 in barter value
and i got these cool things in return:
6 whiskeys and a clan tradition :) which is cool i think and balanced, because 17 metal plates are quite useful to keep.
so in that case, its about 10 barter per bottle :)
or 10 barter for approx 1k food :)
