in combat, some vests might give better situational protection, but only have 1 or 2 slots,
and after big combats, if you want to bring back lots more loot, you can equip a vest with say 3 slots, and bring back some extra items with (including the 1 slot vest you used in combat) for example. :o)

Guess Health screen and inventory count as part of same menue cause one can return from Health screen into inventory by pressing inventory button without spending action to close Health screen and open inventory anew. Allows to fix wounds with rags and cure infection afterwards for single Action.
If I have 2 slots I use 1 medkit, 1 ammo.
3 slots I use 1 medkit and 2 ammo (if two weapons) or medkit, ammo, grenade.
I avoid the 1 slot vests unless I use melee.
Keeping ammo in your vest slots also helps keep track of it, if that matters.
But yeah, healing items are top.
