Definitely a problem that a 1 skull rating can mean such a wide range of overall difficulty lol. I replayed the last mission i died on, brought a literal backpack of supplies and barely clenched a win. The stuff I looted off them was well above anything I could regularly get my hands on and probably didn't belong in that difficulty range.
I don't want the difficulty nerfed into the ground, we just need a reliable way to rebuild a roster of characters after a few back to back bad runs. Right now its like beating your head on the wall if your top agents die (my best guy got 1 clicked by a quasimorph, was fantastic lol)
The problem is there are 4 factors told to the player that will decide difficulty, and the way these factors interact make it very hard to grade linearly.
They are:
1. Faction you are fighting
2. Their power rating
3. Their tech rating
4. Mission type
The listed reward would also give you a rough idea as well. But I think it's based on the same factor that influences the display difficulty now. There's also location which influences layout and quasimorphis, but that's less directly tied to the mission itself.
Not every faction is equally difficult to fight, the power rating influences how many enemies will spawn, and the tech rating influences what equipment they will have. The mission type is usually the least influential, but obviously a Defense mission and an Elimination mission are going to result in different levels of opposition.
All these different factors are going to make it hard to expect the game to accurately gauge difficulty. But the player can get a rough idea just by looking at the mission and the ingame stock market screen. Regardless of whether the game is saying it's a 5 difficulty mission, I know a mission against 500 power Coreward is not going to be as tough as a 3 difficulty mission I do against 1500 power, 2000 tech SBN on the moon right afterwards.
I mean that certainly explains whats happening I'm sure but.... Is that the way it should be? lol. Surely the difficulty rating listed should have some sort of definition as apart of the UI. 1 skull against an easy faction maybe means there is 50 enemies all with axes/pistols, where as 1 skull with a more advanced faction means its 10 guys with medium armour and shotguns/rifles. In the current form, your jumping into a 1 star mission and fighting either of those rosters with no way of knowing what to expect until you just get your face kicked in for 50 hours and memorise who's who lol
