True, but also TLDR for those watching;
Merc work isn't legal so stations aren't really able to recognise your profession or trade with you in general because basically anything a merc would have is a papertrail leading to some ♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥, which would implicate either that station or even the company, the barter system occurs without currency as that transaction would otherwise be recorded, which does mean the merc is totally exploited for it, but as far as station interaction goes it's their only choice, so they have to bite it.
After doing a mission you get reward points that are converted into items that you get as a reward.
Every item in the game has a price/cost.
If you do a lot of missions sometimes you have leftover points that are accumulated in that faction.
For example, i noticed once that i had 2000 trading points with a faction and i traded more and got all the points.
The devs could implement a curency system very easy, maybe they will do it later
