ah i never knew that :) - usually i tried to shoot all the enemies before they could reach me
When it happened I clicked on the enemy, nothing happened, then he shoots, I get panicked, I click, nothing happens, he shoots, I'm dead, laughter.
I will try to recreate this but since basically no one recognises this it's probably me that do something incredibly stupid.

No. I've seen enemies melee with their weapon, but it isn't forced. They can shoot you if they want.
It's also not forced melee for you, you have to move into them.
I have just realized a scenario where this could happen, but it'd be weird if it happened multiple times AND it's the only way OP died.
If you try and attack an enemy and end up clicking on a foreground object your clone will try to move and then just get shot. This can only really happen with the tall metal shelves, but if it was happening to OP they'd be forcing their clone to melee attack since it's be moving into an enemy, which is how that is done.
