It looks as if the 2nd is a major improvement systems and gameplay wise. I'm wondering if there is enough content though to keep the game fresh for awhile. I know EA is roughly scheduled for 1 year.

yes. the first game is a very different experience. it's also finished, whereas RW2 is in dire need of polish and rebalancing

It's a tossup.

RW1 is simpler and stable. Once you find one winning strategy, there's very little RNG to spice things up unless you have the willpower to attempt new strategies.

RW2 is more complicated and is still getting updates, but IMO more interesting. There's enough RNG to HEAVILY encourage attempting new strategies, in exchange for your favourite strategy usually not being viable on a given run.

I loved RW1 but I may never play it again. 2 is just better.

I didn't play a -ton- of Rift Wizard 1, only enough to beat the game once, but all the new mechanics and balance changes make 2 much better IMO. Other than those the games are quite similar in how they play, so I'd only play 1 if you wanted to fully appreciate all the gameplay improvements in 2.

I'd go for 2 directly, no much reason to play the first one over this

The games look the same and has similar mechanics and some similar spells but they play different. The first one you mostly explore builds and see which ones can work with few rng variables through shrines and some items that make a difference
The second, much less polished, is a real roguelike experience in the sense that more random choices are given for you so you need to figure out each run level by level rather than plan out a build from the start.
