Do I need to play judgment first?
I have played almost all of the mainline Yakuza games but I'm older now and short on free time these days.

Everything I have read says this is the better game overall but has a slightly weaker story.

Will I get what is happening of I purchase lost judgement and don't play the first or is that a bad idea?

It's like the other Yakuza games, stories are self-contained for the most part, but the characters growth carry over. You might miss some references here or there, but you wouldn't know anyway. Personally, if I had to pick only one to play, it would be judgment. Both are still top tier within the franchise.

Judgment - Great Story, Great Gameplay, Great Side Content
Lost Judgment - Good Story, Great Gameplay, Great Characters, Good Side Content.

Hmm, I might just pick up judgment then, maybe in a year or two I'll pick up lost judgement and the dlc, at least it will be cheaper by then.

Thanks.
Definitely play Judgment first.
Lost Judgment has a very meh story with no character development and is pretty goofy. Judgment has a great story and is all about the protagonist atoning for past mistakes and dealing with the trauma from his past.

Yes. The first game just has Kamurocho and Lost Judgment has Kamurocho and Ijincho (the city from 7).

The two games tie together a bit more than the standard Y games so yeah, play the first game first. Just don't stick to it too long, the 2nd is the more superior game overall.
