Its an original, its literally wow's predecessor. But like i said, i'm not a fan of the expansions. I have not been able to play any other mmo since this game, the reason? its based around a first person user interface, your UI limits the amount of spells/abilities you can use at a time. this is good, this makes things simple and keybinding is gonna be a bit easier, the UI is less overwhelming than in other mmos (like WoW) also this game has the very best UI in the history of mmos, its almost completely customizable and requires no modding, you can resize and move windows as much as you want, and lock them down aswell. i can still make my UI look like the classic interface for the game.
Heres what i think it has over other mmos.
Playerbase is actually nice and understanding to each other, and people help each other here. this game was originally centered around players working together (you needed to pay wizards for teleporting you to certain areas and you needed to pay clerics to buff you before you go somewhere, to an extent those things are still useful i think, clerics probably still get paid for buffs)
UI is completely customizable, (i think you can also mod it but theres no need) i've been unsatisfied with 100% of all mmo UI's since i played this game.
Keybind ANYTHING you want. yes... literally. i've never seen another game with so many keybind options, its got the ultimate amount of keybinds available.
No need to do quests. the only quests you'll actually want to do (at least last time i played it) is class specific quests for a certain item (known as epic item) and thats a long, challenging but fun questline. You can level up by farming mobs and that is traditionally what i used to do when i played the game. also EXPLORE! yes, you can explore zones now and find ridiculous things, you're usually not too limited by borders, if theres an ocean you can usually i think swim over it and end up somewhere.
Its... THE game that brought video game addiction (on a massive scale) to the history of gaming, and without this game WoW would not have had half the playerbase it has gained. and it could have even possibly failed upon launch. (Most of the original WoW playerbase were people who quit EQ and jumped to WoW)
Heres what its lacking.
Difficulty has been toned down a lot, this is largely cus of loss of players (so people actually have a chance to solo through the game) and just simplifies things (death penalties used to be brutal as hell, but now you can pay for revival, you used to need to get a player cleric to resurrect you, and sometimes necromancer/shadow knight to summon your corpse if you died at a bad spot) I liked the high difficutly curve in the game, but thats maybe just me.
Field of View (its just terrible its 50 or 65, it was made for those old 1024x768 CRT monitors.. hell or even 800x600 monitors!)
Graphics is old as hell, but still not so bad, its better than minecraft :D
Its an old game, for the old game it is station cash is away too expensive currency for it, you can buy so few things for so much money for station cash they're worse than wargaming (world of tanks) and riot games (league of legends) in this regard, a big company like them? come the ♥♥♥♥ on! they can do better than this!
I think this covers some of the basics. try it! its free! but i recommend subscribing to it for the perks and bonuses of it.
Actually UO was not the first. Meridian59 was the first 3d graphical MMO (released in 1995). Before that was Neverwinter Nights, released in 1991 (not the version you are thinking of), which was 2d and you moved around as a tile.
Let's not forget that Asheron's Call released the same year as Everquest as well, which was one of my all-time favorite MMO's.
All that aside, EQ and Ultima Online were really the birth of MMO's with Asheron's Call following close behind, they were the most successful original MMO's that made a serious mark on gaming history.
The original EQ had so many amazing gameplay elements and a harsh environment to survive in, it really made you work to succeed, but that made your successes feel much more rewarding.
Ignore that first idiot that responded. The games's known as "Evercrack" for a reason. If it weren't for EQ none of today's mmo's would be here.
I started playing EQ about a week after they first went online. I have to say, this has brought back memories. I'm enjoying building up my character and revisiting old haunts. :)
I was agreeing with everything you said right up until here. Farming is BORING. The quests were always one of my favorite parts of the game... But that was one of the great things about EQ. You had options. You could quest to your heart's content, or craft, explore or farm... whatever. EQ has it all... and it's FUN. :)
Probably because UO was a TERRIBLE game. If anything UO held online gaming back. It had a terrible UI, terrible game mechanics and the most unfriendly user base I ever dealt with.
Yes - Yserbius, Meridian 59, the AOL game that started as a mud and whose name now escapes me - all came before EQ, but EQ was the first one that was successful in a really big way.
Besides, none of them were ever really done on a scale to compare to EQ. EQ may not have been "first" to be online, but it was certainly the first of it's class and it was the game all the others that came after it (WoW, for example) were trying to beat.
